COVID-19 cases in Pa. rise to surge levels not seen in months

Pennsylvania on Friday posted new cases of COVID-19 at a level not seen for months since the last surge.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed there were 10,127 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide cumulative total cases to 1.8 million.

The last surge of the lethal pandemic was recorded in January of this year. On Jan. 8 the Commonwealth posted 10,178 new cases. The following day, there were 10,045 new cases.

Currently, there are 3,928 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19. Of that number, 837 patients are in the intensive care unit .

The COVID-19 trend in Pennsylvania is trending the wrong way: The 14-day moving average number of hospitalized patients is increasing.

As of Friday, 97 new deaths in the Commonwealth were attributed to the pandemic; the cumulative total of deaths attributed to COVID-19 stands at 33,746 deaths.

Pennsylvania ranks 5th among all 50 states for total doses administered of the vaccine administered. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 70 percent of Pennsylvanians age 18 and older are fully vaccinated.
