WMU, WB make it to SEISC volleyball tournament finals

LETTS — In Southeast Iowa Super Conference Tournament pool play Thursday at Louisa-Muscatine High School, Class 3A’s seventh-ranked West Burlington went 3-0 and Winfield-Mount Union 2-1 to advance to Saturday’s finals at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington.
Van Buren County was 1-2 with a 22-20, 21-14 win over L-M and the hosts were 0-3 with a 21-3, 22-20 lost to West Burlington.
WMU blasted Van Buren County (4-7) in the second set to win the match 21-14, 21-3 and held L-M (2-9) to a single digit as well 21-9, 21-14, but lost to the ranked 3A school 21-10, 21-18.
The Wolves combined totals in the three matches saw 17 kills by Melina Oepping, 14 by Bradie Buffington, and six by Morgan Grelk, thanks to 38 assists by Keely Malone. Malone and Keetyn Townsley each served nine aces and Carlee Sloan four. There were four blocks by Buffington, three by Oepping and two by Audrie Gipple. Defensive hustle produced 34 digs by Townsley, 16 from Malone and 10 from Oepping.
WMU has a 14-7 overall record.
Winfield-Mount Union will play at 5 p.m. against Class 1A’s top-ranked Notre Dame, which went 4-0 and is 24-6 overall. West Burlington (17-1) and Mediapolis (8-9) will play on the other court at SCC, also at 5 p.m.
