NORFOLK, Va. — A federal jury on Thursday convicted a Chesapeake man on charges of credit union fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Prosecutors said 25-year-old Adante Leshaun Dupree took part in a scheme to defraud Navy Federal Credit Union. Dupree and his co-conspirators bought stolen ID's of out-of-state victims and used that information to open accounts at NFCU and apply for auto loans.
Dupree and his co-conspirators then paid a woman to impersonate the ID theft victims to pick up the loan checks and cash them at a Norfolk check-cashing store.
Their scheme fell apart when the woman was caught wearing a wig to impersonate one of the victims who was actually decades older than her.
Dupree could face up to 30 years in prison and faces a mandatory minimum consecutive sentence of two years for aggravated identity theft.
His sentencing is scheduled for September 19.
