Hurricane Otis now a catastrophic Category 5 storm off Mexico's Pacific coast nearing Acapulco
Hurricane Otis has strengthened from a tropical storm to a dangerous Category 5 storm in a matter of hours as it approaches Mexicoโs southern Pacific coast, where it is forecast to make landfall near the resort of Acapulco early Wednesday.
Tropical Storm Idalia takes aim at Gulf of Mexico on a possible track toward the US, forecasters say
The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Idalia is near the coast of Cuba on a potential track to come ashore as a hurricane in the southern U.S. At 10 p.m. CDT Sunday, the storm was about 145 miles off the western tip of Cuba with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph.
Move along, nothing to see here
For a week now, weโve been watching the potential of a Caribbean cloud or two to develop into a monster Gulf hurricane--one that by the American model threatened anywhere from Destin, Florida to New Orleans to Houston to Corpus and, as of Friday and the weekend, Mexico. Here is the Friday forecast with that big storm moving in just south of Brownsville over Labor Day weekend:
A 1997 hurricane season?
Last week, NBC/MSNBC meteorologist Bill Karins posted a trivia tweet noting that the last time we had an August with no named tropical storms was 1997! Now that our models can actually get to the end of the month, itโs worth noting that we may, indeed, get to September before a named tropical storm or hurricane shows up in the Atlantic basin. Saying that, the National Hurricane Center slapped a 20% chance for development on a spot in the Atlantic:
The Gulf awakens
A spin of moisture off the Louisiana coast has now caught the attention of the National Hurricane Center and this morning they forecasted a 10% chance of development in the next 48 hours (and the next five days, but it will be onshore by then). Expected to move southwest across the Gulf, the system is most likely to impact the Brownsville to Corpus area although a few showers tomorrow and Sunday could get thrown our way!
Caribbean storm likely to gain force, hit Central America
The U.S. National Hurricane Center says a storm that has hurled rain on the southern Caribbean and the northern shoulder of South America is expected to hit Central America as a tropical storm over the weekend and eventually develop into a hurricane over the Pacific.
Tropical storm warning for parts of Florida, Cuba, Bahamas
Much of the Florida peninsula, along with parts of Cuba and the Bahamas, are under a tropical storm warning as a system that battered Mexico moves through the Gulf of Mexico, killing at least two in Cuba and bringing threats of heavy rain and wind for the weekend.
