SBIT Professor gets patent for research in Wireless Sensor Networks

Khammam: In a milestone achievement, the Academic Director of the city-based Swarna Bharathi Institute of Science and Technology (SBIT), Prof. C Satyanarayana was granted patent by Indian Patent Office for his innovation in the field of WSN. The patent was granted for innovation in the most sought after contemporary research domain, life extension of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). The patent was filed in December, 2016 and received the patent from Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks Jan 21st.
Giving details of the research done for the patent, Prof. Satyanarayana told Telangana Today that the requirement of longer life with the constrained energy source of a sensor node of WSN has attracted many researchers across the globe in recent times. As the sensor nodes were deployed in hazardous environments, impenetrable terrains and enemy zones it would be difficult and impossible to replace the drained batteries of sensor nodes that measure environmental parameters and transmit the data back to a network gateway where it was aggregated, stored and processed.
Though the electronic circuitry of the sensor node was intact it was abandoned because of limited lifetime of the battery. Many strategies have been evolved in terms of a number of power-aware algorithms in simulation, but when deployed practically the observed life improvement of sensor nodes was not even 50 percent of the results achieved in simulation.
“The past research could not find a valid relationship between sensor parameters and electrochemistry characteristics of batteries. Our investigations unearthed the problem. We found optimum values for sapling interval, temperature and transmission power level of data packets”. With a practical experimental approach solutions have been formulated that resulted in almost 40 percent life enhancement of the WSN. It could open new horizons in the WSN research field and we could superimpose our findings with existing algorithms, Prof. Satyanarayana said.
The professor thanked his mentor Dr Z J Khan, his sister Narayanamma and the almighty for the support in his research work. The SBIT Chairman Gundala Krishna, its secretary and correspondent, Dr. G Dhatri and principal G Raj Kumar congratulated Satyanarayana for the achievement.
