Marks & Spencer is bringing extra joy to our shopping baskets this summer by launching an unusual new fruit that's ideal for serving at family picnics.

The limelon is a hybrid fruit that the supermarket invented just in time for the warmer months as we crave a refreshing snack.

Revealing the new fruit on Instagram, M&S said the limelon tastes like a juicy melon with a hint of lime.

It explained that the new arrival is "deliciously refreshing with a zesty citrus bite".

If you're keen to get your hands on a limelon and wondering how to serve it, the supermarket recommends slicing it and having the zingy fruit on its own, enjoying it topped on yoghurt or adding it to savoury lunchtime salads.

You'll have to be quick if you wish to get your hands on one as it's a limited edition and part of M&S summer fruit selection.

Naturally, foodies and fans of the supermarket took to Instagram to share their delight at the new launch.

Chef and author John Gregory-Smith said: "What!!! I must margarita them".

TV cook Juliet Sear wrote: "Wow!!!".

One social media use joked: "Call me when you have a Banango."

Another added: "Absolutely brilliant!!! Made for this hot weather 😋😋🌞🌞".
