BUENA VISTA, NJ — A Franklin Township police officer fatally shot a Cape May County man who stole a police car following an accident in Atlantic County on Monday, authorities announced.

Roy K. Jackel Jr., 41, of Cape May Court House, was involved in an accident at Cumberland Road and Tuckahoe Road in Buena Vista at about 3 p.m. Monday, according to the Attorney General's Office.

Police from Franklin Township, Gloucester County, responded to the scene to serve as mutual aid, according to the Attorney General’s Office. When an officer left his police car, Jackel got in and drove off, police said.

He drove to East Oak Road in Buena, where he stopped. It was here that Jackel was shot during an ensuing encounter with a police officer, according to authorities.

Police officers provided medical assistance to Jackel until emergency medical personnel arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene

The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting under a 2019 state law that gives the office authority to investigate police-involved shootings.
