MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police say a man was shot and killed in North Memphis Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to a report of a shooting on Calvert Avenue near Oriole Street. Officers found one victim with a gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police have not said what may have led up to this shooting.

Police have not identified the victim, but WREG has spoken with numerous residents who say they knew him. They say he had just gotten out of prison and was working on a promising rap career.

“He stayed out the way. We keep him in the studio,” said Grey Jones, a friend of the victim. “That music was what kept him going. If he wasn’t good at anything else, he was a perfectionist with that.”

But witnesses say just a couple of days ago, comments on social media between the victim and another group got ugly. Now, someone has lost their life, allegedly over a problem that began online.

“It ain’t that serious y’all!” Jones said. “It really ain’t. Leave that stuff online. If it’s life and death, you need to go talk to somebody about it.”

WREG crews saw more than 40 people that gathered, shocked and heartbroken by what they saw. They say they’ll try to carry positive memories out of a tragic ending.

“You can’t stop him. That’s what it is,” Jones said. “He’s a good getter, that’s what it is. He’s gonna keep going. He always just kept going. Nothing stopped him.”

Memphis Police say that two male suspects fled the scene in an older, green Mercedes Benz. Police say this is an ongoing investigation.
