Top 25 Michigan high school boys basketball teams for week of Jan. 20

Thanks to some high profile invitational matchups over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, the rankings have had a major shakeup, including a new No. 1 team.

Here are the top 25 boys basketball teams in Michigan, regardless of state classification.

25. Bridgeport (9-0)

Division 2

The Bearcats are looking strong and just picked up a 67-57 win over Ann Arbor Skyline on Monday. In its two games prior to facing Skyline, Bridgeport gave up a combined 34 points. A trip to Standish-Sterling awaits on Friday.

24. Southfield Christian (6-2)

Division 1

Previous rank: 23

Offense is clicking for the Eagles as they handed Novi Christian Academy its first loss with a 92-74 win last week. Christian also put up 82 points in a blowout win over Plymouth Christian Academy.

23. Southfield A&T (7-1)

Division 1

Previous rank: 22

In its home-and-home series against Oxford last week, the Warriors pulled off a 69-68 win over the Wildcats on Tuesday. However, Oxford handed A&T its first loss on Thursday, 72-71. Road games against Warren Lincoln, Rochester Hills Stoney Creek and Birmingham Groves await this week.

22. Grand Blanc (7-3)

Division 1

Grand Blanc suffered its third loss of the season over the weekend when it lost to Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice on Saturday. A positive is Grand Blanc beat Davison the night before. Grand Blanc will put itself through another back-to-back test when it hosts Kalamazoo Central on Friday and travels to Ferndale on Saturday.

21. Flint Carman-Ainsworth (6-3)

Division 1

Previous rank: 12

The Cavs squeezed by Saginaw Heritage last week and trounced Flint Powers Catholic. However, Carman-Ainsworth could not get past unbeaten Mount Pleasant on Monday and fell, 66-58. The Cavs are rewarded with a Tuesday night matchup against another undefeated team when it hosts Goodrich.

20. Macomb Dakota (8-2)

Division 1

Previous rank: T-25

Dakota is on a roll, winners of five straight. Last week, they beat Utica Eisenhower and Roseville in convincing fashion and then beat Detroit Western on Monday afternoon in the Horatio Williams Freedom Classic. A Tuesday matchup with Macomb L’Anse Creuse North and a Thursday game against Chippewa Valley awaits.

19. Otsego (8-1)

Division 2

Previous rank: 21

The Bulldogs picked up wins over Edwardsburg and Plainwell last week, giving Otsego a six-game win streak. Up next is a Tuesday game against winless Mattawan, followed by a matchup with Paw Paw on Friday.

18. East Lansing (7-1)

Division 1

Previous rank: 18

The Trojans suffered their first loss last week, falling on the road to Okemos, 69-51. However, they did bounce back with a 59-51 win over Grand Ledge. A matchup with St. Johns awaits Tuesday and a home matchup against Lansing Everett will close out the week.

17. Detroit Douglass (9-2)

Division 2

Previous rank: 10

Douglass struggled a lot against Detroit King on Friday last week, falling 55-46 for its first PSL loss of the season. The Hurricanes were able to bounce back with a 74-61 win over Farmington on Monday. Winnable games against Detroit East English and Detroit Osborn remain for this week.

16. Detroit Martin Luther King (9-3)

Division 1

Previous rank: 16

King picked up wins over Detroit Pershing and Detroit Douglass last week, the latter of which put King into sole possession of first-place in the PSL East. However, the Crusaders were not able to ride their momentum into Monday and lost to Clarkston, 55-41.

15. Williamston (9-1)

Division 2

Previous rank: 20

Williamston had no problem beating Haslett, 56-40, last week. Williamston also beat Flint Powers Catholic on Monday, 64-47. The Hornets host Mason on Friday.

14. Hudsonville (6-0)

Division 1

Previous rank: 17

The Eagles beat Grand Haven and East Kentwood last week by double digits. A trip to Rockford is the only game this week and it's set for Friday.

13. Mt. Pleasant (9-0)

Division 1

Previous rank: 19

The Oilers topped St. Johns and Midland Dow with ease last week and then picked up a nice signature 66-58 win over Flint Carman-Ainsworth on Monday. The Oilers turn there attention to a big Saginaw Valley League Red Division home matchup with Bay City John Glenn on Friday.

12. Detroit Cass Tech (10-1)

Division 1

Cass Tech picked up wins over Detroit Collegiate Prep and Detroit Renaissance with ease. Cass Tech also opened this week with a 59-51 win over Canton to push its win streak to six games. Detroit Cody and Detroit Communication Media Arts are both up this week.

Winners of six in a row, the Corsairs didn't have any issues putting away Milford and Walled Lake Central last week. Mott has a good opportunity to keep rolling against Walled Lake Western and South Lyon East this week.

10. Grand Rapids Catholic Central (7-1)

Division 2

Previous rank: 8

Weather robbed us of a potentially great game between Catholic Central and Benton Harbor as Saturday's Floyd Mayweather Classic was canceled. Still, Catholic Central extended its winning streak to six games with wins over Allendale and Coopersville last week. The Cougars face a strong D3 opponent in Grand Rapids Covenant Christian on Tuesday and travel to face Sparta on Friday.

9. Benton Harbor (8-1)

Division 2

Previous rank: 6

Although its Saturday matchup against Grand Rapids Catholic Central was canceled because of snow, Benton Harbor was still able to get a blowout win over Grandville last week. Benton Harbor should be able to keep rolling against South Haven on Tuesday, which is the only game scheduled for the week.

8. River Rouge (9-1)

Division 1

Previous rank: 9

River Rouge is starting to roll as it picked up three victories by at least a 16-point margin since the last rankings, beating Detroit University Prep, Ecorse and North Farmington without issue. Domination should continue this week with games against Harper Woods and Detroit University Prep.

7. Grand Rapids Christian (8-0)

Division 2

Previous rank: 5

The Eagles remain undefeated, handing Wyoming its first loss of the season with a key 66-64 win in OK Gold action. Christian travels to face another Gold contender on Tuesday in East Grand Rapids. A game against Forest Hills Eastern will wrap up a key conference stretch on Friday.

Finally, Lincoln is getting into a consistent schedule so we can get a nice helping of Emoni Bates. Bates had 40 points in a win over Dexter and 33 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Detroit Edison Public School Academy on Monday. A trip to 7-2 Chelsea awaits on Friday.

5. Muskegon (6-1)

Division 1

The bus ride home from Ferndale must have been a nice one as the Big Reds traveled across the state to beat the host Eagles, 67-66. Although Muskegon let a double-digit fourth quarter lead nearly slip completely away, a win is a win. The Big Reds are primed to trounce Jenison and Mona Shores this week.

4. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (8-1)

Division 1

Although the Eaglets tried their best to make multiple comeback attempts in its loss to Flint Beecher on Monday, St. Mary's never took the lead at any point in the game. St. Mary's did get key CHSL Central Division wins last week over Detroit Catholic Central and Detroit U-D Jesuit. The loss to Beecher is a tough setback but there is no time to mourn as a 7-1 De La Salle team arrives on Tuesday while pesky Brother Rice hosts the Eaglets on Friday.

3. Flint Beecher (9-1)

Division 3

Previous rank: 11

Beecher had blowout wins over Webberville and Flint Hamady last week and welcomed back Mr. Basketball hopeful Jalen Terry in the process. After 24 points in his first game back in the win over Webberville, Terry had 26 points in an impressive 70-61 win over previously unbeaten Orchard Lake St. Mary's on Monday. Beecher should be able to flex a bit in its away game against Burton Bentley on Friday.

2. Clarkston (7-1)

Division 1

This defining week for the Wolves is off to a strong start as Clarkston had no trouble dusting off a 10-day layoff to pull away from Detroit Martin Luther King on Monday for a 55-41 victory. The Wolves are right back into the grind with a Wednesday matchup at Ferndale and a home game against rival North Farmington on Friday.

1. Ann Arbor Huron (8-0)

Division 1

Previous rank: 2

No one probably expected Huron to even sniff the No. 1 spot when the season began, but here we are. Huron has given up over 50 points only once this season and the River Rats won that game, 84-62. The River Rats blew out Temperance Bedford and Monroe last week, winning by a combined score of 136-60. Its first SEC test awaits on Friday night against Ann Arbor Skyline.
