EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Two vehicles were engulfed in flames today when Evansville Police Department offices responded to an afternoon call to the intersection of Highway 41 and Covert Ave. The fire department was summoned to the scene. The Vanderburgh County Coroner has confirmed that three people died in the accident.

A pickup truck traveling northbound on U.S. 41, just south of Covert Ave. struck an S.U.V. that was either stopped or slowed down for the intersection in front of the truck. Upon impact, the S.U.V. and the pickup truck burst into flames.

Two good Samaritans were able to free the driver from the pickup. He was transported to the hospital. The extent if his injuries are unknown at this time, but he is expected to survive.

The good Samaritans also ran over to the S.U.V. in an attempt to rescue the occupants of that vehicle, but the flames were too hot and they were unsuccessful. The S.U.V. was burned so badly that it is undetermined how many occupants were inside.

The identities of the deceased have not been released. As the investigation is ongoing, further updates will be issued when available.
