The construction work that has taken over many California highways will be put on hold for the Fourth of July weekend, but drivers still face delays and closures because of emergencies and damaged roads.

The California Transportation Department is warning holiday drivers about these stretches of highway in the northern part of the state:

  1. Last Chance Grade. Drivers on Highway 101 between Crescent City and Klamath can expect delays of up to 30 minutes through Monday, July 5. Starting July 6, the road will be completely closed from 8 a.m. to noon and 3 to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays because of a project to stabilize the highway through a slide-prone coastal area.
  2. Highway 97. The 50-mile stretch between Weed and Dorris has been closed since Monday because of two wildfires in Siskiyou County. There has been no indication that the closure will be lifted for the weekend.
  3. Highway 36. Work on the road damaged by last summer’s August Complex fires will continue into Friday evening, with delays of up to 30 minutes. Over the weekend, most work will be suspended, but short delays are possible.
  4. Interstate 5. Lanes in both directions near Lake Shasta have been intermittently closed since Wednesday evening because of the Salt Fire.
  5. Highway 89. Because of traffic jams and delays on recent holiday weekends, Caltrans is advising drivers to seek alternatives to Highway 89 near McArthur-Burney Falls State Park.
  6. Highway 299. A paving project between Adin and Bieber will run until 3 p.m. Friday, with delays of 20 to 30 minutes. Work will be suspended July 3-5.

In addition, the purple dots denote two roadside rest areas that will be closed during the holiday weekend, on Highway 299 near Salyer and on I-5 just north of Lake Shasta.
