‘Dragnificent!’ on Hulu Is the Best Drag Show You Haven’t Seen Yet

With two seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race airing at the same time, there’s really no shortage of drag content on TV right now. That was also the case with, like, all of 2020. But y’know what? 2021 is stressful AF and you deserve even more drag content, especially the feel-good kind that can make you believe that the world is a bright, shiny place (if only for 45 minutes). That’s why you really need to get into Dragnificent! now that Season 1 is streaming on Hulu!

This makeover series debuted on TLC in April 2020 (remember, Phase 1 of the pandemic? Ah, nostalgia…) and quickly became a pitch perfect pick me up for me and my husband. The series follows four Drag Race legends—Jujubee, Thorgy Thor, BeBe Zahara Benet, and Alexis Michelle—as they drop in on people in need of a pick me up, a fresh wardrobe, and/or a new attitude. Then, through the magic of drag, each week’s makeover subject unlocks something inside of them that was really there all along. Also, you get to see BeBe float through the suburbs like an ethereal, regal queen. The juxtaposition, we live for it—and now it’s on Hulu.

While the show debuted close to a year ago, the time feels right for Dragnificent!’s big streaming debut. For one thing, you maybe lost track of this campy cable show in the flood of drag content last spring and summer. Yes, Dragnificent!’s premise is similar to HBO’s We’re Here. We’re not going to ignore that! In fact, we’re going to celebrate that we have so much drag content, and all of it is valid. Dragnificent! excels specifically because it is so light and fun.

We love the emotional catharsis and sobering realities confronted in We’re Here, for sure; but we’re also here for the warm, supportive hug that the divas of Dragnificent! give out. Seriously, you watch a mom give her budding drag queen son the pair of heels he coveted as a little boy and try to keep from happy sobbing.

Now’s also a perfect time to watch Dragnificent! because you, Drag Race superfan who missed this show last spring, just watched Jujubee slay in RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 5 last summer. You want to see more of this quippy, quirky queen? Here’s a whole season of Dragnificent!, and it’s ready to deliver all the Jujubee you need. Truly, who better to show the hapless ladies how to shop than the self-proclaimed manager of the mall herself?

But really, the power of Dragnificent! in 2021 lies in the meta move of it being added to Hulu right now. Sure, that’s contractually when TLC decided to let the series stream on a big platform like Hulu (in addition to the smaller, newer service Discovery+). But it also feels like this big, colorful show is busting into our dreary, cold, isolated lives in order to cheer us up and pluck us out of the nightmare loop we’re all stuck in. If you need something to drown out the news, there’s nothing better than the sound of four drag queens turning someone’s life inside out and upside down for the better. Dragnificent! is a magnificent pick-me-up.
