Trustees approve 10-year capital plan
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue board of trustees on Friday (May 28) approved the university's 10-year capital plan that includes all new projects planned beginning in July 2011.
Those in the plan that would involve state funding for the 2011-2013 biennium include:
* $38 million for a new animal sciences facility at West Lafayette, for which private gifts also would contribute an additional $20 million to provide flexible, modern research and teaching space. The project also would accommodate a central animal housing facility to replace the Life Science Animal Building adjacent to Lilly Hall and consolidate operations of several other animal facilities across campus.
* $27.6 million for an emerging technologies building at Purdue University Calumet to provide new offices, research and teaching labs for the Department of Biology and create a home for the campus's centers and institutes. Nursing and education programs and services currently housed in the Gyte Annex would move to the new building, and the annex would be torn down.
* $13.5 million for renovation of the Helmke Library at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), with a focus on infrastructure (HVAC, electrical and telecommunication systems) to support changing technologies and operations.
* $33.4 million for a science building at Purdue North Central to add teaching and laboratory space.
* $3.5 million for renovation of the central power plant at Purdue North Central, replacing a chiller, cooling tower and electrical cabling.
"The development of the 10-year capital plan is driven by the university's strategic plan and aligned with the facilities master plan for each Purdue campus," said Al Diaz, executive vice president for business and finance, treasurer.
As part of the process for securing state funding for capital projects, the university will submit the approved plan for consideration by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education later this year.
In addition to state appropriations, some projects also would be funded all or in part from private gifts, grants, student fees and funds generated by self-supporting auxiliary enterprises such as Intercollegiate Athletics and University Residences. Other near-term West Lafayette projects in the 10-year plan that will not require state funding include Bailey Hall (a new facility for Purdue Musical Organizations); a new agricultural and biological engineering building to replace its machine shop, which will be co-located with the Central Machine Shop; a replacement for Food Stores; and an equine satellite facility in Shelbyville, Ind.
For the mid-term of the 10-year plan, the following new buildings, renovation projects and upgrades are planned:
* West Lafayette: Renovation of Heine Pharmacy Lab and Grissom Hall and a new large-animal hospital, classroom library building and biology building.
* Calumet: Power plant upgrades and additions to the library and recreation area.
* Fort Wayne campus: Renovations to Kettler Hall and the former State Development Center plus a new classroom-office building.
* North Central: Schwarz Hall renovation and a new classroom-office building.
