BATTER UP: Simmer and Sift

Florida Cane Distillery rum cake is on the menu as pastry chef Alicia Wolding, a.k.a. the Girl with the Whisk Tattoo, leads the latest installment of this annual cooking demonstration and tasting. Simmer and Sift allows you to watch Wolding talk about the science behind baking and showcase how to whip up her featured dessert, everything from the rum-infused fruit filling and Swiss meringue buttercream icing to the artful decorating. Cocktails from Ybor City spirits maker Florida Cane complete the evening. $30, $25 members. 6:30-9 p.m. Aug. 22. The Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, 255 Beach Drive NE. HIVE FIVE: Hotel Bar celebrates the bees

In honor of National Honey Bee Day, Hotel Bar serves a celebratory libation featuring local honey and lavender syrup while supplies last. The craft cocktail hub will contribute 25 percent of the Lavender Bees Knees proceeds to the Honeybee Conservancy. Monin, the Clearwater-based purveyor of gourmet beverage flavorings, supplies the syrup, while the honey comes from Bayshore Bees in Tarpon Springs. And Bayshore Bees and Monin, also set to give its own lump sum to the conservancy, aren't strangers, either. Monin donates its excess syrups to Tampa area bee farms — including Bayshore Bees, which raises queen honeybees to repopulate hives — on the regular and even packages some of the sweet nectar they produce. $12. 4 p.m. Saturday. 200 N Tampa St., Tampa.
