PROVIDENCE, RI — The Rhode Island Department of Health announced 124 new cases of the coronavirus Thursday and 22 additional deaths. This new data brings the state's totals to 14,494 cases and 677 deaths.

As of Thursday, 222 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Rhode Island. Of these patients, 53 were in intensive care units and 36 on ventilators. In total, 1,186 people have been discharged from the hospital.

Rhode Island continues to see a drop in daily testing totals, reporting 1,869 Wednesday, compared to around 3,000 per day the week before. Gov. Gina Raimondo said the low number of new positive cases reported Monday and Tuesday were likely due to a steep drop in testing over the holiday weekend, when the CVS site in Lincoln was closed and other locations saw far fewer people.

As the state prepares to move into phase two of reopening on Monday, Raimondo reminded Rhode Islanders that now it is more important than ever to follow mask, social distancing and gathering rules to avoid a spike in cases and the need to close the economy again.

"If we keep following the rules, then we can continue to safely reopen," Raimondo said.
