Burglar caught on CCTV breaking into shop and fleeing with £10,000 mobility scooter – at 8mph
Watch: Mobility scooter thief caught escaping showroom at 8mph
This is the bizarre moment a thief smashed his way into a disability shop showroom before making off with a mobility scooter – at 8mph.
The suspect was caught on CCTV carrying out the unusual crime, kicking down the doors of the shop before leaving with a £10,000 scooter from inside.
The crime took place at Modern Mobility in Fosse Park, Leicester, on Saturday evening.
The suspect can be seen smashing his way in by kicking down the doors before trundling out of the broken shopfront on a £10,000 mobility scooter.
Police have now launched an investigation to track down the burglar, who was spotted by a member of the public making a slow getaway at around 8.45pm.
The suspect, who was wearing a face mask and glasses, was caught on camera first trying to pick the lock of the disability aids store inside the shopping centre, without success.
He is then seen kicking down the front door, which eventually gave way, before jumping into the Cabin Car scooter and making his getaway.
The whole thing took just 20 seconds, with the man leaving in the top-of-the-range scooter, the maximum speed of which is 8mph.
Store owners think the man knew exactly what he was looking for and have offered a reward for information which leads to his capture and the safe return of the "most luxurious mobility scooter on the market in the UK".
Manager Nick Partridge said: "Somebody has now been left without a mobility vehicle because of this cowardly act.
"The Cabin Car is the most expensive item in the shop, somebody clearly knew what they were looking for."
A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: "At around 8.45pm on Saturday, March 13, officers received a report from a member of the public of a burglary at a commercial premises on Fosse Park Avenue.
"Officers attended and found the front door of the premises had been forced open. A mobility scooter was stolen.
"No injuries were reported and inquiries are ongoing."
