This is the bizarre moment a thief smashed his way into a disability shop showroom before making off with a mobility scooter – at 8mph.

The suspect was caught on CCTV carrying out the unusual crime, kicking down the doors of the shop before leaving with a £10,000 scooter from inside.

The crime took place at Modern Mobility in Fosse Park, Leicester, on Saturday evening.

Police have now launched an investigation in a bid to track down the robber, who was spotted by a member of the public making a slow getaway at around 8.45pm. The suspect, who was wearing a face mask and glasses, first tried to pick the lock of the disability aids store inside the shopping centre but to no avail.  He then began kicking down the front door, which eventually gave way, before he jumped in the Cabin Car scooter - which can reach a speed of up to 8mph. Within 20 seconds of entering the store, the man drives out of the building in the top-of-the-range mobility scooter and has not yet been traced.  Store owners believe the man had 'cased the joint' before the robbery as he appeared to know exactly what he was looking for.

Police have now launched an investigation to track down the burglar, who was spotted by a member of the public making a slow getaway at around 8.45pm.

The suspect, who was wearing a face mask and glasses, was caught on camera first trying to pick the lock of the disability aids store inside the shopping centre, without success.

He is then seen kicking down the front door, which eventually gave way, before jumping into the Cabin Car scooter and making his getaway.

The whole thing took just 20 seconds, with the man leaving in the top-of-the-range scooter, the maximum speed of which is 8mph.

Store owners think the man knew exactly what he was looking for and have offered a reward for information which leads to his capture and the safe return of the "most luxurious mobility scooter on the market in the UK".

Manager Nick Partridge said: "Somebody has now been left without a mobility vehicle because of this cowardly act.

"The Cabin Car is the most expensive item in the shop, somebody clearly knew what they were looking for."

A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: "At around 8.45pm on Saturday, March 13, officers received a report from a member of the public of a burglary at a commercial premises on Fosse Park Avenue.

"Officers attended and found the front door of the premises had been forced open. A mobility scooter was stolen.

"No injuries were reported and inquiries are ongoing."
