The Urban League of Greater Columbus hosts party at the polls

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Rain or shine, Columbus voters showed up at the polls all weekend long.

They also had the help of different Columbus organizations encouraging them to vote early, and also providing them with food, water and entertainment while they were waiting.

With just one week left of early voting in Georgia, the Urban League of Greater Columbus and the Columbus NAACP teamed up with other organizations in the Chattahoochee valley for “Party at the Polls” in an effort to get more than 100,000 African-American voters to the polls on the last Saturday of early voting.

“We wanted people to know if they were standing in long lines, to not be defeated, but remain encouraged and know they can grab a hot-dog and remain in line to vote,” said Kayla Kudratt, with the National Urban League.

The National Urban League made stops throughout the Peach State Saturday and Columbus was their second stop. They provided catered food, water and local radio stations set up at the city services center and the Shirley B. Winston Recreation Center.

“It feels absolutely phenomenal to see so many groups out here working to make sure voters are comfortable and those that may be hungry have a snack. That they have a bottle of water to drink,” said Columbus attorney Teddy Reese.

“I think as a community, and as a city coming together to encourage people to vote, it’s real good to get the message out there to vote, soo everyone get out there and vote,” said one voter named Jakobe.

Early voting in Georgia ends October 30, so if you have not participated in early voting yet, and you plan on doing so, you still have the rest of the week.
