WEST MEMPHIS, AR (WMC) - Two people are dead after an officer-involved shooting in West Memphis Wednesday night.

Arkansas State Police say two people were killed in the shooting near North 18th and McAuley Drive. A West Memphis police officer was also injured. He has since been released from the hospital.

Two neighbors were watching TV in the area when they heard shots being fired.

“She thought they were firecrackers… I said that didn’t sound like firecrackers," Linda Foster said. "It sounded like a bomb or something. I really couldn’t explain it.

Makitha Foster said they heard 10 to 15 shots ring out while they were watching TV.

At the scene, windows of a silver sedan were shattered.

It’s unclear what led up to the shooting.

West Memphis Mayor Marco McClendon issued this statement:

“First and foremost my prayers are with the officer that was injured and the victims of the deadly shooting. My heart goes out to everyone and all families involved. I’m out of town here in Little Rock with my staff at an Arkansas Municipal League Conference but I’ve been in touch with the police chief and I’m waiting to get more information.”
