Violent day in Tennessee: What we know about deadly shootings in Nashville, Knoxville

Residents in a suburban community outside of Nashville woke up Monday to shelter in place orders after a deadly shooting, followed hours later by a fatal school shooting in Knoxville and an evening shooting that left a child dead in the streets of North Nashville. 

It made for a violent 24 hours across Tennessee. Here's what we know about the unrelated shootings in Lebanon, Knoxville and Nashville which captured national attention.

Mother, daughter killed in Lebanon subdivision; suspect found dead 

Marie Varsos, 31, and her mother Deborah Sisco, 60, were killed early Monday in the StoneBridge subdivision, according to the Lebanon Police Department. 

Marie Varsos was estranged from her husband, Shaun R. Varsos, who police believe to be the shooter in this incident. She was living with her mother, Sisco, at the home on Whispering Oaks Drive.

Police say Shaun R. Varsos entered the residence armed with a shotgun. He is believed to have been shot and injured during the incident, prior to shooting and killing the victims, police said.

Shaun R. Varsos, 36, of Nashville, fled the area and was later found dead in Bellevue near his residence. 

He died from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound near his home inside an SUV on the side of Harpeth Knoll Road, Metro Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said.

The Metro Nashville Police Department said that Shaun Varsos, 36, of Nashville was found dead inside an SUV in Bellevue. Police believe he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shooting prompted lockdowns at area high schools and a shelter in place order for residents of StoneBridge while police searched for Shaun R. Varsos. 

Police believe the shooting was a domestic incident that escalated, Lebanon Police Department Sgt. PJ Hardy said.

Knoxville high school shooting: Officer injured, student killed

On Monday afternoon, Knoxville's Austin-East Magnet High School was the scene of a shooting. One student was killed in a shootout and a police officer was hurt. 

Details remain uncertain but authorities confirmed the shooting occurred inside the school building as police confronted a student with a gun.

Knoxville police say they received a report of a student with a gun and went to the school at about 3:15 p.m. Monday. Officers located the suspect in a restroom and ordered him to leave, according to a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation preliminary report. Police entered the restroom when he refused to comply, the report said.

When the suspect fired at police, the report said, an officer returned fire. The student was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The student has not been identified.

Tuesday morning, Knoxville police identified the officer injured as Adam Wilson. The 20-year veteran of the Knoxville Police Department was serving as Austin-East's school resource officer. 

Wilson is recovering from after a surgery Monday night. Police Chief Eve Thomas said he was in serious condition after the shooting. 

The school was placed on lockdown Monday afternoon. After the scene was cleared, a designated site on the school grounds was announced for parents to reunite with their students.

Austin-East will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Students will not learn virtually or in person. Superintendent Bob Thomas said counselors are available for students.

North Nashville shooting: Child killed, three others injured

Nashville police are still searching for a suspect who shot four people in North Nashville public housing on Monday night, killing a three-year-old girl.

Police responded at 6:40 p.m. to Cumberland View Apartments at the intersection of 25th Avenue North and Dowlan Street where they said two children and two adults were shot.

Police identified the child killed as Jamaylah Marlowe

Jamaylah and her half-sister, age 2, were struck by gunfire in a vehicle after someone open fire in the apartment complex' parking lot. 

The 2-year-old girl was shot in the arm and is expected to recover, police reported Tuesday.

Also shot that night: Two men identified by police as Nashville residents Thomas L. Winston Jr., 23, and Deandre Dean, 26. Both men suffered non life-threatening injuries in the incident, police said. 

The sisters were in a car caught in crossfire. The driver of the car, police said, attempted to accelerate away as both children were struck by bullets.

Their mother then drove them to General Hospital where they were transferred to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

There, Jamaylah died from a wound to her back, police said.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, two people had been arrested in connection to the case, but none of their charges were related to firing any of the fatal shots Tuesday night, police said, noting that their investigation continues.
