GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A state school board member spent the day in Guntersville getting a firsthand look at the local school system.

School board member Cynthia McCarty got a chance to see all the good things going on in the Guntersville city school system but she also got to hear about some of the things that need to be done.

McCarty walked the halls of Guntersville Middle School on Friday even getting a present from a student.

It was a special treat for McCarty to interact with students much younger than the ones she teaches at Jacksonville State University.

She toured the lab and classes but later saw Guntersville High School.

There are current discussions about making renovations to some schools but replacing the high school.

“You know the next steps are looking at the funding sources for improving those facilities and building a new high school. We have Allen Ziegler who is a bond attorney out of Birmingham, I met with him last week along with our chief school financial officer and he is going to be at our work session on Monday,” said Guntersville School Superintendent Brett Stanton.

That school board meeting is set for Nov. 19 at 5 p.m.
