Contra Costa Coronavirus Deaths Reach 99; Lamorinda Cases

LAMORINDA, CA — Contra Costa County health officials announced one new coronavirus related death on Monday, with the overall toll now at 99.

There were 115 new cases of coronavirus confirmed in the county. That's an improvement over last Monday, when newly reported cases were 172. The seven-day average of new cases, which Gov. Gavin Newsom says is a closely watched metric because it accounts for spikes, is down to 123, the lowest it's been since July 3.

But if the declining number of new cases is encouraging, the number of people hospitalized in the county is certainly drawing the attention of state health officials who decide which county is on or off the "Watch List." There are now 82 coronavirus patients hospitalized in Contra Costa County, with the seven-day average climbing to 84, the highest ever. Back in April, when the first wave of coronavirus came through, the seven-day average only reached 40.

It's important for the county to get all key statistics headed down in order to get off the Watch List. Only then will the county be allowed to reopen schools, fully open businesses, and more.

Here in Lamorinda, there have now been 58 cases confirmed in Lafayette since the beginning of the pandemic, 27 in Moraga, and 72 in Orinda.
