New London County's COVID cases up 17.2%; Connecticut cases plummet 14.2%

Connecticut reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 3,798 new cases. That's down 14.2% from the previous week's tally of 4,427 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Connecticut ranked 50th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 11.9% from the week before, with 1,010,209 cases reported. With 1.07% of the country's population, Connecticut had 0.38% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 19 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Some governments may have delayed reporting across the Labor Day holiday, and people who normally would have been tested might not have been tested then. Week-to-week comparisons may be inaccurate.

New London County reported 469 cases and two deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 400 cases and three deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 25,260 cases and 458 deaths.

Windham County reported 171 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 163 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 11,820 cases and 198 deaths.

Across Connecticut, cases fell in five counties, with the best declines in Hartford County, with 891 cases from 1,293 a week earlier; in New Haven County, with 940 cases from 1,113; and in Fairfield County, with 817 cases from 930.

Connecticut ranked 4th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 74.7% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 63.1%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Sunday, Connecticut reported administering another 48,590 vaccine doses, including 21,427 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 48,099 vaccine doses, including 23,411 first doses. In all, Connecticut reported it has administered 4,905,135 total doses.

Within Connecticut, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in New London County with 177 cases per 100,000 per week; Windham County with 146; and Litchfield County with 114. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were New Haven County, with 940 cases; Hartford County, with 891 cases; and Fairfield County, with 817. Weekly case counts rose in three counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in New London, Middlesex and Windham counties.

In Connecticut, 30 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 36 people were were reported dead.

A total of 378,933 people in Connecticut have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 8,424 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 40,955,201 people have tested positive and 659,970 people have died.
