In Short: Pandora, one of the most popular music providers out there, has just announced ‘The Drop’, which is essentially a new personalized playlist for Premium subscribers (trial users also have access to it). Pandora claims that this new feature uses “state of the art machine learning models to create a custom-built playlist filled with the latest and greatest music”, and that playlist will be created based on your listening habits, the whole point is for the app to provide you with music and artists that you actually enjoy listening. This playlist will be updated as soon as new music drops, says Pandora.

Background: Pandora has been around for a long time at this point, but it never reached the likes of Google Play Music or Spotify. Well, the company seems to be testing out new features with which it plans to close that gap, at least to a degree. This new feature will basically make sure that new songs are added to the aforementioned playlist the day they are released, as long as they fit your profile, basically. Songs will be listed in order for you, the newest ones will be included on the top, and that list will include up to 100 songs, so you don’t have to worry about not having time to listen to the newest ones, they’re not going anywhere, at least that’s what Pandora says. This new feature is already available within the app, and it seems like it is available for both iOS and Android users, and Pandora did not mention either of the two OS’ specifically.

Impact: It remains to be seen if Pandora users will like this new feature, which seems fine on paper, but it remains to be seen if it will function as well in real life. People are usually too lazy to keep checking top charts, and checking on their favorite artists all the time, which is why this feature may prove to be useful to some consumers.
