Jeremiah Williams leads stifling Ramsay defense in 35-0 win over Bessemer City

All the Ramsay defense wanted to do was put the uncertainty in the rear-view mirror, get back on the field, and show what it could do.

Mission accomplished.

The Rams stifled host Bessemer City en route to a dominating 35-0 victory in the season opener for both teams.

Bessemer City managed just 64 yards in the game and was held to 12 yards and just one first down in the first half.

“It’s been a struggle this summer trying to adjust to the season, not know if we are going to play or not,” said Ramsay defensive lineman Jeremy Williams, who is No. 2 on AL.com’s A-list of top senior propsects. “Tonight, we wanted to set the tone with our defense and dominate and be physical, and we were able to do that.”

Williams, considered the No. 2 college prospect in the state, had eight tackles, three sacks and forced a fumble that Timothy Keenan recovered in the end zone. Keenan had seven tackles and a sack.

“Being able to play is a blessing today,” said Keenan. “On the fumble recovery it was a high snap and Jeremy had a great rush where he knocked the player out of the way, and I was able to fall on the ball in the end zone.”

Quarterback Karmen Ivory and receiver Kameron Thomas connected on a pair of touchdown passes. The first was a 29-yard pass in the first quarter, and the second was a 48-yarder in the second.

“I was going with the best matchup with Kamreon Thomas, one of the fastest players in the state,” Ivory said. “I threw it up and he just went and got it.

“It meant a lot to have the chance to get back on the field with my brothers with all that’s going on with the coronavirus.”

Ivory completed seven of 10 passes for 180 yards and rushed for 50 yards and a 6-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

“Ivory has been throwing the past couple of years really good,” Ramsay coach Reubeun Nelson said. “I just hope he continues to do the things that he is capable of.”

Omar Young capped the scoring for the Rams with a 7-yard run late in the second quarter.
