One seriously wounded in Upper Hill Springfield shooting

SPRINGFIELD -- One was seriously injured in a shooting in the Upper Hill section of the city Sunday afternoon.

The shooting occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on Marlborough Street, near the intersection of Middlesex Street. Officers responded for an audio ShotSpotter activation and found the gunshot victim inside a car, said Ryan Walsh, police spokesman.

Neighbors said they heard at least a half-dozen gunshots. An SUV riddled with at least four bullet holes had jumped the curb and was stopped on the tree belt across the street from 32 Marlborough St.; the driver’s side front and rear windows were shattered.

A witness at the scene told police the shooter and the second person escaped on foot behind homes on Middlesex Street and headed toward Wellington Street.

Police blocked the intersection of Marlborough and Middlesex streets with crime scene tape. Detectives had placed at least 10 yellow evidence cones across the street from the car.

The Springfield Police Detective Unit is on the scene and investigating the crime, Walsh said.

This is the second shooting that occurred on Sunday in Springfield and the third shooting in the city in four days.
