‘Pokémon GO’ Community Day: How To Get Yourself A Shiny, Powerful Sceptile

Following
This article is more than 5 years old.

Pokémon GO Community Day is here yet again, and we are still working out way through the Gen 3 starters as featured offerings. This time it’s Treecko’s turn, the grass lizard that evolves into Grovyle, then Sceptile.

Community Day is live for some regions now, and my own at 3 PM ET today. The bonus today is quarter egg hatch distance which is always one of my favorites, because you’re obviously going to be walking around a ton for an event like this, so you can burn through those incubators (and buy more, which is what Niantic is hoping for).

But the main attraction today is Treecko, and by proxy, Sceptile. Once again there is a unique move for Sceptile to learn when he’s evolved today, Frenzy Plant, a powerful grass move that he’s not going to be able to get otherwise after this, so don’t miss your shot.

What most people are hoping for, however, is a collection of shiny Treecko and by proxy, shiny Sceptile. I feel like Niantic has been slowly bumping up spawn rates for shinies on Pokémon GO’s Community Days the last few months. It used to be more like 3-5%, and these days I think we’re more in the 6-8% range, meaning that 1 out of every 15-18 or Treecko you find should hopefully by a shiny with any luck.

Unlike some of the other shiny selections, Treecko, Grovyle and Sceptile are actually quite a bit different than their originals when in shiny form. Instead of being green, they are a bright aqua blue, making them stand out far more than say, shiny Blastoise. Not quite at “black Charizard” level, but it’s one of the better ones out of all the starters if you ask me. So you’re going to want to make sure to grab one by the time the day is done.

As ever, my tips include running 3 hour lures if you have any PokeStops near you, and then to keep incense on at all times, as it was made for events like this, as spawns from incense are also likely to be Treeckos during this time period today. One bit of good news I’m hearing from overseas is that Treecko has had its high flee rate reduced for this event, so you won’t always have them running away on you which is what normally happens when you encounter Treecko in the wild. I can see how that would have been massively annoying, so it’s good of Niantic to have planned ahead to nip that problem in the bud, no grass-pun intended.

Should be a fun day of hunting if the weather is remotely okay in your area. Hopefully you end the day with an ultra-rare Frenzy Plant, shiny, high IV Sceptile, which is definitely what I’m shooting for.
