‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ is a sequel 30 years in the making

The last time fans saw Bill and Ted take an excellent adventure was in 1991 in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. Series writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon started working on the script for the third film in 2009, but it ended up taking them nearly a decade to perfect.

“We have a script that we really are proud of, that we worked very hard on, that we’ve done many iterations of – and we did it on spec, meaning we spent years working on it because we wanted to get it right, creatively,” Solomon told Digital Spy in 2018. “This is not, ‘Hey let’s all cash-in on the Bill & Ted thing for money’ – this is the opposite. This is, ‘We love these characters, they’ve been with us for our whole lives’ – Chris and me, and Alex and Keanu – and we wanted to visit them again as middle-aged men. We thought it would be really fun, and funny, and sweet.”

The movie picks up with Bill and Ted as middle-aged men

30 years after Bogus Journey, Bill & Ted Face the Music picks up with Bill and Ted as dudes in their mid-40s. Now married with kids, the friends discover that the Wyld Stallions’ last song wasn’t enough to save the world.

“The stakes are higher than ever for the time-traveling exploits of William ‘Bill’ S. Preston Esq. and Theodore ‘Ted’ Logan,” the official movie synopsis reads.  “Yet to fulfill their rock and roll destiny, the now middle-aged best friends set out on a new adventure when a visitor from the future warns them that only their song can save life as we know it.”

Bill and Ted’s daughters, Thea (Samara Weaving) and Wilhelmina (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and wives, Princess Joanna (Jayma Mays), and Princess Elizabeth (Erinn Hayes), are there to help them on their awesome new adventure. And on their mission to find a new song, they encounter a new group of historical figures, as well as a few musical legends.
