How players from Peoria fared in voting for 2022 Mr. and Ms. Basketball of Illinois

Eight high school players from the Peoria area received votes in the races for Mr. and Ms. Basketball of Illinois for the 2021-22 season — including two in the top 10.

Morton senior Katie Krupa — Journal Star Player of the Year — was fourth in voting for Ms. Basketball of Illinois, while Brimfield senior Ella Lune was ninth in results released Thursday.

Another four girls players and two boys players from the Peoria area were among those who received a single vote for the annual awards, selected by a statewide poll of coaches and media and presented by the Chicago Tribune and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.

Gonzaga commit Braden Huff of Glen Ellyn Glenbard West won Mr. Basketball of Illinois with 473 points, getting named first on 84 of 123 ballots. Duke recruit Jaden Schutt of Yorkville Christian was second with 192 points and 15 first-place votes.

Sophie Swanson of Barrington won Ms. Basketball of Illinois with 95 points and 13 first-place votes. The Purdue commit beat out Brianna McDaniel of Chicago Kenwood, who earned 15 first-place votes but only 82 points overall. Simone Sawyer of Lincolnshire Stevenson was third.

Morton's Krupa earned five first-place votes among the 76 ballots cast. The Harvard commit earned 47 points overall on a voting scale that game five points for first, three for second and one for third.

Krupa, a 6-foot-1 first-team all-stater, averaged 17.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists for the Potters (29-6), who finished third statewide in Class 3A and were Mid-Illini Conference co-champions.

Brimfield's Lune, headed to Eastern Illinois, was ninth in Ms. Basketball voting with 28 points and three first-place votes.

The 6-foot first-team all-stater led Brimfield to the Class 1A state championship. She averaged 19.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.2 steals and 2.2 blocks for the Indians (32-4), who won both the Prairieland ICAC conferences.

Another four Peoria-area girls players got one vote each: Ashley May of Fieldcrest and Claire McDougall of Washington earned second-place votes. Ella Goodrich of Fieldcrest and Mya Wardle of Peoria Notre Dame each earned third-place votes.

In the race for Mr. Basketball, two boys from the Peoria area grabbed votes.

Metamora senior Zack Schroeder and Journal Star Player of the Year earned a single first-place vote. All-area pick Wes Hunt of Peoria Christian earned a third-place vote.
