Alabama adds 1,144 COVID-19 cases

Alabama added more than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 in the last day but the large increase is due to a backlog and not a surge.

According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, 1,144 positive COVID-19 cases were added to the state’s total today. Of those cases, 306 represent a backlog from a period of time from Sept. 24, 2020 to April 16.

All labs are required by law to report all results -both positive and negative – to ADPH but delays are fairly common and are out of the control of the health agency.

In all, Alabama has had 532,895 cases of coronavirus with 11,001 deaths since March 2020. The state has had 509,800 recoveries with 365 people currently hospitalized, a steep decline from the 2,000-plus hospitalized in January. ADPH shows 1.23 million people in Alabama have been vaccinated.
