The renowned Harold S. Kushner, Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Israel of Natick, will speak at the Rabbi Bernard H. & Minna Ziskind Memorial Lecture May 15. This annual event, underwritten by Sheldon Friedland in memory of his wife Shulamith and her parents, will feature this popular theologian and author speaking on the topic of his most recent book, "Nine Essential Things I’ve Learned About Life."

As a congregational rabbi for half a century and the best-selling author of 12 books on faith, ethics, and how to apply the timeless wisdom of religious thought to everyday challenges, Kushner has demonstrated time and again his understanding of the human spirit. In this compassionate new work, Kushner relates how his time as a 21st-century rabbi has shaped his views of religion and morality. He elicits nine essential lessons from the sum of his teaching, study, and experience, offering a lifetime’s worth of spiritual food for thought, pragmatic advice, inspiration for a more fulfilling life, and strength for trying times.

In 1981, Kushner published his first bestseller, "When Bad Things Happen to Good People." Since that time, the book has been translated into 12 languages. A few of his other works include "When Children Ask about God" (1972) and "To Life!" (1993). In 1995, he was awarded the Christopher Medal for "When All You’ve Ever Wanted Isn’t Enough." In 2003, he published "The Lord Is My Shepherd."

This presentation at 7:30 p.m. May 15 is open to the public, and will be followed by a dessert reception. The synagogue is at 145 Brownell Ave., New Bedford.
