CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS — One of the city's most popular downtown festivals Dia de los Muertos is going to have a new look because of the ongoing pandemic.

Typically, hundreds of people pack into the downtown area for the Dia de Los Muertos street festival. But like many other events, that simply won't be the case this year due to the ongoing health crisis.

The 2020 Dia de los Muertos festival will look a little different this year. The annual event will include virtual art exhibitions, online art workshops and other virtual events. “The festival is so popular and so well loved in our community,” said Michelle Smythe Executive Director of K Space Contemporary.

Some physical art exhibitions will still be on display at K Space Contemporary. One will even take you down memory lane.

Smythe said, “This year we are also going to do a projected slide show of all of the past photos from the past Dia De Los Muertos Festivals. We will have an art exhibition about Mexican food that will be on display in K space contemporary. We have a youth art exhibition for grades 6 through 12.”

To keep the tradition alive, they will still have the big piñata contest that has been going on since 2011. The winning class from this exhibition will receive money for classroom supplies.

“Our extravaganzia de piñata and that is K through 12 groups who do pinatas. So we are going to take the pictures of all those pinatas put them on our Facebook page and let the public still vote on them,” said Smythe.

Michelle says that she wants to keep the community safe but also continue the life, culture, and fun that dia de Los Muertos brings to South Texas.

“And it is something that truly brings our community together,” said Smythe.

The exhibits will begin in the month of October and ends the second week of November. For more information on the festival's events and times you can go to, https://diadelosmuertoscc.com/
