Corpus Christi police arrest 2 people in fatal shooting at Ayers Street convenience store

Corpus Christi police have arrested a man wanted for murder and a woman wanted for failure to report a felony.

Terry Stafford, 29, was arrested Friday evening after a warrant was issued Thursday The warrant is connected to a shooting at a convenience store in the 4100 block of Ayers Street earlier this week.

His bond is set at $1 million.

Another warrant was issued for 22-year-old Mercedes Martinez for failure to report a felony and hindering apprehension. 

Her bond is set at $35,000.

Martinez also has an active warrant for failure to appear for an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with no bond.

Stafford and Martinez were located in North Central Texas, according to police. They will be extradited to Nueces County.

Police say a man and woman wanted in connection to a fatal shooting at a convenience store on Sept. 20 were caught in North Central Texas in a white, older model Chevrolet Suburban.

Around 4 p.m. on Monday, officers went to the store after receiving a call about a shooting. They found a man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. 

The man was identified by the Nueces County Medical Examiner as 44-year-old John Wesley Lucas. He had a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police were searching for a suspect vehicle and two women who were called persons of interest early in the week. 

On Thursday, a spokesperson for the police department said the vehicle thought to be involved was located and impounded but declined to provide any additional details.

Police said the two persons of interest have been identified.
