Fireworks are still a go for 2020 in these Michigan communities

SAGINAW, MI — The threat of coronavirus and the COVID-19 pandemic has canceled fireworks and other Fourth of July festivities in many Michigan cities, including Bay City, Grand Rapids and Saginaw.

But some smaller communities have decided to move forward with their annual celebrations. Here are some places across the state where fireworks shows are still planned.

Village of Breckenridge

The Village of Breckenridge, located in Gratiot County, will celebrate the holiday with a car show, 8k run/walk and fireworks at dusk on Saturday, July 4, at Jaycee & Hoffmeyer Memoiral Park, according to a post on the Village of Breckenridge Facebook page.

Alpena

The city of Alpena will have its fireworks display just after dusk on July 4. Mayor Matt Waligora said the show is funded completely by donations and he’s confident spectators can practice social distancing while enjoying the show.

East Tawas

The Tawas Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in late May decided to cancel its annual Independence Day parade but to continue with its scheduled July 4 fireworks display.

“With a launch location on Tawas Bay and greater opportunity for socially distant participant viewing, this event was more reasonably supported by the Board as a large-scale event that could continue for the 2020 summer event season,” reads a post on the Tawas Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.

“We will continue to work with local public health and safety officials to best ensure that participants remain as educated regarding safety when participating in large-capacity events as possible. We remain grateful to our community members for your input in helping us make these difficult decisions.”

Caseville

The Caseville Area Chamber of Commerce announced it will host a smaller fireworks show this year, to take place July 3 on the Wooded Island, rather than on the break wall. Related fundraising events have been canceled, but the chamber is accepting donations.

Mackinaw City

Officials with the Mackinaw Area Visitors Bureau announced the Mackinaw City fireworks will go on.

“Mackinaw CITY fireworks are NOT canceled. Mackinaw City looks forward to seeing everyone on the 4th of July,” reads a post on the Mackinaw Area Visitors Bureau Facebook page.

St. Ignace

Over the bridge, St. Ignace will celebrate with fireworks, too, according to the Discover St. Ignace Facebook page. The town plans to have fireworks on July 4 and on every Saturday through Labor Day.

Sears

In the middle of the Mitten, a private show on Big Lake, near Crittenden Park in Sears, about 40 miles northwest of Mount Pleasant, is expected to light up the night sky.

Port Austin

The community of Port Austin will celebrate the Fourth of July with a parade at 3 p.m. and fireworks at dusk, according to the Port Austin Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page.

Au Gres

The 2020 Arenac Fireworks Festival is scheduled to take place July 4 with a fireworks display beginning at dusk at the mouth of the Au Gres River.

Sault Ste. Marie

And a Fourth of July fireworks display is still taking place in Sault Ste. Marie, The Sault News reports, but the Independence Day parade has been canceled.

Gaylord

Gaylord will have three fireworks displays for locals to chose from this year. On July 3, the Otsego Lakes Fireworks are slated for 10 p.m. at Otsego Lake County Park, 1657 County Park Rd.

Locals can also visit SummerFest at Treetops Resort Friday at 5 p.m. for a day of live entertainment and fireworks at night. Located at 3962 Wilkinson Rd., the event costs $5 per car.

The 4th of July Fireworks in Johannesburg display is still on for 10 p.m. Friday night. Fireworks will be set off at Johannesburg-Lewiston Area Schools, located at 10854 M-32.

Independence Township

Clarkston will not have fireworks or a Fourth of July parade this year, but neighboring Independence Township plans to have a fireworks display at Pine Knob Ski Resort at 10 p.m. Friday. If it rains, the fireworks will take place at 10 p.m. Sunday, July 5.

Ellsworth-St. Clair Lake

The Ellsworth-St. Clair Lake Fireworks and Fourth of July celebration are scheduled to take place Friday. Events include a DJ, community boat parade and more with fireworks beginning at about 10:30 p.m.

Belleville area

The municipalities in the Belleville area have canceled their events, but a private club on the lake will have fireworks over the water Friday night, according to the Belleville Area Chamber of Commerce. While the event at the club is private, the fireworks can be seen from many places east of the Belleville Road Bridge.

Roscommon

A fireworks display is planned at dusk on Saturday at the Fire Training Grounds, formerly the Roscommon County Fairgrounds, in Roscommon, according to a calendar of events posted on www.visithoughtonlake.com.

Union City

A fireworks display is planned at about 10 p.m. Friday over Alumni Field in Union City, but, because of COVID-19, there will be no admission to the field and no restrooms available. Parking will be restricted to every other space in the middle and high school parking lots. People will be required to wear masks and practice social distancing while on school grounds.

Beaverton

A Fourth of July parade is scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. in downtown Beaverton on Saturday, followed by fireworks at dusk at Ross Lake Park, according to the Beaverton Area Business Association.

Fife Lake

A fireworks display is planned for dusk Saturday at the beach off State Street, according to Village of Fife Lake officials.

Iron Mountain

Iron Mountain will celebrate the holiday with a fireworks display at dusk on Saturday over Millie Hill off Park Avenue, according to city officials.

Lake Orion

A fireworks display is planned at dusk on Saturday on Lake Orion, according to the Downtown Lake Orion Facebook page.

Hillsdale

The Hillsdale County Chamber of Commerce is partnering with other Hillsdale County groups to host a fireworks show at dusk Friday.

Fireworks are being shot from the Hillsdale County Fairgrounds, 115 S. Broad St., but spectators won’t be able to view the fireworks from the fairgrounds.

People are encouraged to watch from nearby, as this year’s show contain a higher flying display so spectators can view the fireworks from outside the fairgrounds.

Manitou Beach

The fireworks display at Devil’s and Round lakes in Manitou Beach is scheduled for 10 p.m. on Friday. Fireworks will be set off from the Devil’s Lake sand bar.

Somerset Township

Somerset Township is having Music in the Park and Fireworks Saturday at McCourtie Park, 12715 East Chicago Road in Somerset Center. Music in the park begins at 7 p.m. and fireworks begin at dusk.

Pleasant Lake

The Pleasant Lake-Lake Association will host fireworks at dark on Saturday over the lake at 4401 Styles Road in Pleasant Lake. Limited access to the county park at 4401 Styles Road will be available due to social distancing requirements.
