COIMBATORE: To mark the Hindu monk and philosopher Swami Vivekananda’s birthday on January 12, four first-year students from Tirupur-based NIFT-TEA created a portrait of the freedom fighter using pointillism. The students took five days to complete the art piece.
The portrait measures 300 sq ft in size and is a tribute to the philosopher's constant advocacy for people to have more patience and self-discipline to achieve success or move forward.

Pointillism is a painting where an art work is designed using small dots of pure colour. It uses the science of optics to create colours from many small dots placed so close to each other that they blur into one image to the eye.
“Pointillism requires a lot of patience, self-discipline and passion and this is what Swami Vivekananda propagated,” said one of the students Amritha Sri.
The students worked day and night using many types and sizes of point brushes and acrylic colours. “We decided to bring in colour to the artwork because we are fashion design students and study colours a lot,” added Amritha.
The 15ft by 15 ft canvas will be up for display in the college office.
“We hope it will build students’ curiosity towards Swami Vivekananda’s teachings and also tell people that with patience even large works with pointillism can be done,” said Yamini, another student who worked on it.
