Number Of Alabama Coronavirus Cases Tops 700: The Week In News

MONTGOMERY, AL — The number of coronavirus cases in Alabama has more than tripled in the last week. With 720 cases reported as of Saturday afternoon, the Alabama Department of Public Health has seen a considerable rise in cases since reporting fewer than 200 cases just a week ago.

The number of COVID-19 deaths in the state remained at 3 as of Saturday morning.

During the week, Gov. Kay Ivey took significant measures to help curb the spread of the virus, issuing two landmark orders in the state:

Alabama Schools Closed For Remainder Of School Year

Students in Alabama's K-12 schools will not return to their classrooms for the 2019-20 school year, according to an announcement by Gov. Kay Ivey Thursday. Students will continue the school year from their homes, to try to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Ivey Shuts Down Non-Essential Businesses

Gov. Kay Ivey announced Friday that all non-essential businesses in the state must close through April 17.
