Six dead, three injured after wrong-way fatal collision on Interstate 37 near Mathis

Six people are dead and three seriously injured after a wrong-way vehicle crash in San Patricio County early Saturday morning.

The fatal collision took place around 3:33 a.m. on Interstate Highway 37, about half a mile east of Mathis, according to a news release sent by the Texas Dept. of Public Safety.

The news release states the driver of a Toyota Camry, who had three passengers in the vehicle, was traveling southbound in the northbound lane on the interstate.

A driver of a Dodge Grand Caravan, who had four passengers in the vehicle, was traveling northbound when the Toyota struck the minivan head-on in the left lane.

The release states the driver of the Camry and three passengers were all pronounced dead on scene, with one of the passengers being ejected from the vehicle.

The driver was identified as Noam Caleb Ortiz, 19, of Alice. The three passengers were identified as Ruben Gonzalez Jr., 24, of Alice; Julian Reyna, 18, of Alice; and Kanyon Alegra, 18, of Alice.

A passenger from the minivan was also pronounced dead on scene. The passenger was identified as San Antonio resident Trent Ryan Edge. Edge was 19. 

The release states the driver of the minivan and his three passengers (two women and one man) were transported by ambulance to Christus Spohn Hospital Shoreline in Corpus Christi.

Helena Paige-Marie Dumas, 18, of San Antonio,died at the hospital late that same night. She was a passenger in the minivan. 

One woman woman is in stable condition with serious injuries. Both the male driver of the Dodge and another male passenger are in serious condition with major injuries.

DPS troopers are further investigating the cause of the fatal collision.

A GoFundMe was created for the mother of Julian Reyna. The fundraiser has raised over $11,000 in donations.
