The votes have been tallied and the winners of the Vermont Varsity Insider Athletes of the Week honors are ... Ava Hubbard of Missisquoi soccer and Jack Ware of Mount Anthony football.

Hubbard won a tight battle by just 35 votes, garnering 39.61% to top the girls field while Ware prevailed on the boys side with 34.23% of the vote.

The online voting at BurlingtonFreePress.com began Sept. 16 and closed at midnight on Sept. 12.

More on this week's winners:

Missisquoi freshman Ava Hubbard (13) is this week's girls Athlete of the Week.

Ava Hubbard, Missisquoi soccer: The freshman deposited two goals as the Thunderbirds halted a 41-game losing streak, a skid that lasted three years, in their 5-1 triumph over Winooski.

Jack Ware, Mount Anthony football: Ware rumbled for 229 yards and a trio of touchdowns as the Patriots tied a program record with 62 points in the second-half charge to beat North Country. Ware's second TD gave MAU the lead for good, part of a 44-point unanswered run.

Mount Anthony's Jack Ware runs with the ball during the 2018 high school football season.
