The first round of this season’s edition of the longstanding basketball rivalry between Cedar Shoals and Clarke Central goes to the Jaguars.

On Saturday afternoon on the east side, the boys and girls basketball teams at Cedar Shoals triumphed over the Gladiators, with the girls winning 59-49 and the boys taking a thrilling 58-57 victory.

In the girls game, the Jaguars (7-8, 1-1 in Region 8-5A) were led by Autumn Jones, who had 12 points and four assists, Ashley Lester, who had 11 points and five rebounds, Skylar Lattimore, who had eight points and eight rebounds, Jada David, who had eight points, and Deshauna Foote, who had seven points.

Mikaylyn Glover led the Gladiators (1-8, 1-1) with 28 points.

In the boys game, Cedar Shoals, ranked No. 4 in Class 5A, outscored Clarke Central 13-10 in the fourth quarter to claim the region victory. The Jaguars (15-1, 2-0) were led by Quincy Canty, who had a game-high 19 points and four rebounds, and Tyler Johnson, who chipped in 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals.

The Gladiators (7-4, 1-1) were paced by Maricus Estrich, who had 16 points, Josh Smith, who added 12 points, and Jaiquez Smith, who contributed 10 points.

Tuesday will find three state-ranked teams playing at Cedar Shoals as the Jaguars host Buford. The girls game, featuring the No. 1-ranked Wolves, will tip off at 6 p.m. and the boys game (with the Buford boys ranked No. 8) following at 7:30 p.m. Clarke Central will host Loganville on Tuesday, with the girls starting at 6 p.m. and the boys starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Jaguars and Gladiators will meet again on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Clarke Central.

BOYS BASKETBALL

ATHENS ACADEMY 49, ATHENS CHRISTIAN 38: At Athens Christian, the Spartans snapped a two-game losing streak and defeated the Eagles for the second time in two weeks as Deion Colzie recorded a double-double.

Colzie had 25 points and 10 rebounds for Athens Academy.

The Spartans (3-3, 1-0 in Region 8-A) were set to host Prince Avenue Christian on Saturday and will play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Providence Christian. Athens Christian (4-6, 0-1) was set to play at Providence Christian on Saturday and will host Hebron Christian (ranked No. 2 in Class A Private) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

MADISON COUNTY 68, OCONEE COUNTY 61: At Danielsville, the Red Raiders rode a 15-0 run in the fourth quarter to win their second consecutive game and even their Region 8-4A mark at 1-1.

Madison County’s Adam Metts led all scorers with 25 points. Rod Jones added 17 points and Nolan Hill contributed 13 points.

Da’shawn Elder paced Oconee County with 20 points while Zach Oeschle had 12 points and Aaron Birston contributed 10 points.

The Red Raiders (4-11) were set to play Saturday at Hart County (ranked No. 4 in Class 3A) and will host North Oconee at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Warriors (8-5, 0-2) were set to host Jackson County on Saturday and will play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X, ranked No. 8 in Class 4A.

EAST JACKSON 51, JACKSON COUNTY 50 (OT): At Commerce, the Eagles won their third consecutive game and captured their first Region 8-3A victory with an overtime win over rival Jackson County.

East Jackson’s Makayl Rakestraw led all scorers with 27 points.

For Jackson County, Bryson Odom scored 17 points and Kalib Clinton added 14 points.

The Eagles (8-6, 1-4) will play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Monroe Area. The Panthers (4-8, 1-4) were set to play Saturday at Oconee County and will host Jefferson at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in a region game.

HART COUNTY 48, JEFFERSON 45: At Hartwell, the Dragons lost a close Region 8-3A game to the Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 4 in Class 3A.

Jacob Radaker led Jefferson with 22 points.

The Dragons (9-7, 2-3) will play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson County in a region game.

LANIER 61, WINDER-BARROW 53: At Sugar Hill, the Bulldoggs lost for just the second time in their last nine games and fell to 10-4 overall and 0-1 in Region 8-6A with a league loss on the road to the Longhorns, who came into the game ranked No. 4 in Class 6A.

Tyreek Perkins led Winder-Barrow with 26 points and six rebounds. Isaiah Nelson-Odada added 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks and Cameron Stillwell had eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Bulldoggs were set host rival Apalachee on Saturday and will host Habersham Central at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

RIVERSIDE MILITARY 70, PRINCE AVENUE CHRISTIAN 64: At Bogart, the Wolverines fell to 4-8 with a Region 8-A loss to Riverside Military.

The Wolverines were set to play Saturday at Athens Academy and will host George Walton at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

SOCIAL CIRCLE 70, OGLETHORPE COUNTY 61: At Social Circle, the Patriots fell to 3-12 overall and 0-4 in Region 8-2A in a league loss that saw the Redskins total 18 fourth-quarter points on free throws.

Oglethorpe County had four players score in double figures. Dante Martell and Justice Waller scored 15 points each and Caleb Pittman and Brandon Barnes added 10 points apiece.

The Patriots were set to host Banks County on Saturday and will play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Monticello.

DACULA 76, APALACHEE 71: At Dacula, the Wildcats had three players score in double figures but the Falcons escaped with the Region 8-6A victory.

Jamonte Wallace led all scorers with 28 points and he was followed by Brayson Hays (10 points) and Montee Flahn (10 points). Shaan Cook and Josue Caples Torres added eight points each.

Apalachee (4-10, 0-2) was set to play Saturday at Winder-Barrow and will host Gainesville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

NORTH OCONEE 35, BARTRAM TRAIL (Fla.) 28: At the Moramarco Challenge Flagler Palm Coast High School, the Titans won for the third time in their last four games and improved to 12-4.

Jenna Tulenko of North Oconee led all scorers with 13 points.

The Titans were set to play Saints Academy (Fla.) on Saturday and will return to Region 8-4A play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Madison County.

MADISON COUNTY 76, OCONEE COUNTY 72: At Danielsville, the Red Raiders won for the fifth time in their last six games and improved to 10-7 overall and 1-1 in Region 8-4A with a league win over the Warriors (6-9, 1-1).

Kayla McPherson of Madison County led all scorers with 45 points and Tiffany Wilson added 13 points.

Sybille Foucart led Oconee County with 20 points and LaNya Scott chipped in 13 points.

The Red Raiders were set to play Saturday at Hart County and will host North Oconee at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a region game. The Warriors were set to host Jackson County on Saturday and will play a region game at 6 p.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X (ranked No. 8 in Class 4A).

JEFFERSON 69, HART COUNTY 35: At Hartwell, the Dragons – ranked No. 3 in Class 3A – moved to 14-3 overall and 5-0 in Region 8-3A play with a league victory on the road.

Jefferson had three players post double-digit points – Livi Blackstock led with 18 points, Deshona Gaither added 16 points and Ellie Kinlaw chipped in 10 points.

The Dragons will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson County in a region game.

JACKSON COUNTY 60, EAST JACKSON 55: At Commerce, the Panthers won their second game in a row and posted their first Region 8-3A win while the Eagles fell to 8-8 overall and 1-4 in the region.

Kennedy Harris led Jackson County with 15 points. Ashlyn Thompson scored 14 points and Carson Anderson chipped in 13 points.

For East Jackson, Haven Rollins scored a game-high 19 points, Antonia Pittman had 15 points and Kenzie Whitehead tallied 11 points.

The Panthers (3-12, 1-4) were set to play Saturday at Oconee County and will host Jefferson (ranked No. 3 in Class 3A) at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Eagles, who have lost three in a row, will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Monroe Area.

COMMERCE 36, GEORGE WALTON 28: At Commerce, the Tigers halted a two-game losing streak and won their Region 8-A opener against George Walton.

Bryanna Sanders was Commerce’s leading scorer with 16 points.

The Tigers (10-4, 1-0) were set to host Hebron Christian on Saturday and will host Bethlehem Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

LANIER 59, WINDER-BARROW 53: At Sugar Hill, the Bulldoggs dropped their Region 8-6A opener to the Longhorns.

Taniyah Parrish led Winder-Barrow with 18 points.

The Bulldogs (6-6, 0-1) were set to host Apalachee on Saturday and will host Habersham Central at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

SOCIAL CIRCLE 51, OGLETHORPE COUNTY 39: At Social Circle, the Patriots fell to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in Region 8-2A with a league loss to the Redskins.

Shacoreyia Williams led Oglethorpe County with 19 points and Ashanti Faust added 11 points.

The Patriots were set to host Banks County on Saturday and will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Monticello.

DACULA 69, APALACHEE 32: At Bethlehem, the Wildcats dropped their 11th consecutive game in a Region 8-6A loss to the Falcons, ranked No. 4 in Class 6A.

Joanna Gross led Apalachee with 10 points and Kensley Kraus contributed eight points.

The Wildcats (2-14, 0-1) were set to play Saturday at Winder-Barrow and will host Gainesville at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

CLARKE CENTRAL 57, JOHNSON-GAINESVILLE 27: At Clarke Central, the Gladiators posted their first victory of the season and got Region 8-5A play started on the right foot with a decisive win over the Knights.

Mikaylyn Glover led all scorers with 16 points and India Sheats added 13 points for Clarke Central.

The Gladiators (1-7, 1-0) will play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Shoals, which forfeited its game Thursday night against Loganville, is 6-9 overall and 0-1 in the region. Clarke Central will host Loganville at 6 p.m. Tuesday and the Jaguars will host Buford, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

CLARKE CENTRAL 80, JOHNSON-GAINESVILLE 28: At Clarke Central, the Gladiators had three players score in double figures as they won for the third time in their last three games and were victorious in their Region 8-5A opener.

Marcius Estrich led the way with a game-high 19 points, followed by Josh Smith (16 points) and Justin Layne (11 points).

Clarke Central (8-3, 1-0) will play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Shoals, ranked No. 4 in Class 5A, and will host Loganville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

CEDAR SHOALS 72, LOGANVILLE 49: At Loganville, the Jaguars – ranked No. 4 in Class 5A – won their ninth consecutive game and improved to 1-0 in Region 8-5A.

Quincy Canty led Cedar Shoals with 23 points, four rebounds and two assists. Kashik Brown had 13 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals and Jamal McIntosh had 12 points, two assists and two steals.

The Jaguars (15-1, 1-0) were set to host Clarke Central at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and will host Buford – ranked No. 8 in Class 5A – at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
