Shirley’s Tippy Canoe, famous Troutdale restaurant, goes up in flames

Shirley’s Tippy Canoe, a famous restaurant along the Sandy River near Troutdale, went up in flames Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to the restaurant, 28242 Historic Columbia River Hwy., about 5 a.m. Photos and videos show the building consumed by smoke and flames.

Firefighters continued to douse the torched restaurant about 8 a.m. The building appears to have been destroyed.

The Tippy Canoe was known for its large menu and plentiful portions, as The Oregonian reported in 2013. Prior to Friday’s fire, the restaurant’s attractive patio was outfitted with stone tables, fire pits and a barbecue. Blues and jazz livened up the evenings during the summer.

The restaurant has also been featured on the popular Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” which is hosted by Guy Fieri.

The Historic Columbia River Highway is closed Friday morning between Southeast Woodard Road and Stark Street, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.
