SANTA CLARA — Arista Networks has greatly widened its footprint in Silicon Valley with the purchase of an office and research building near the tech company’s Santa Clara headquarters.

Arista has bought a building that totals 97,700 square feet that’s located at 5200 Patrick Henry Drive in Santa Clara, property documents filed on Aug. 4 show.

The company, acting through an affiliate, 5200 Patrick Henry Drive, paid $40 million for the office and research building, according to a deed filed with the Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office.

The company’s headquarters at 5453 Great America Parkway are slightly under a mile away, which works out to a three-minute drive or a 19-minute walk.

Santa Clara-based Arista Networks, which makes networking systems and products, leases its existing headquarters from Irvine Co., property records show.

Arista’s current headquarters building totals 149,000 square feet, according to Compstak, a commercial property, service.

The company stated that its lease in Santa Clara is slated to expire sometime in 2023, Arista Networks reported in a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

This news organization requested a comment from Arista Networks regarding the transaction.

The building that Arista Networks has just bought includes amenities such as a conference room, 28 offices, a coffee bar, and a kitchen, according to a brochure prepared by commercial real estate firms CBRE and Cushman & Wakefield.

During the 12-month period that ended on June 30, Arista Networks earned $728.6 million on revenue of $2.63 billion. For the calendar year of 2020, Arista earned $634.6 million on revenue of $2.32 billion.

In addition to leases of offices and other types of spaces, numerous tech companies have used property purchases to expand their holdings in Silicon Valley.

Google has been particularly active in purchasing office buildings and land sites in Mountain View near its Googleplex headquarters. Google has also bought properties in Sunnyvale, north San Jose, and downtown San Jose. The downtown San Jose purchases are slated to accommodate a transit-oriented neighborhood the search giant is developing.

Apple has bought properties in its home base of Cupertino as well as in north San Jose.

Adobe a few years ago bought a site to develop a new office tower that enabled the company to dramatically expand its downtown San Jose headquarters campus.

Applied Materials, Intuitive Surgical, and Fortinet have bought a number of properties in Sunnyvale.

Facebook has bought properties near its Menlo Park headquarters to accommodate its growth.
