California Coronavirus: Live Updates On Reopening, Orders, Cases

Here's a roundup of all the coronavirus developments in California as of August 2.

CALIFORNIA — California hit another grim milestone in its struggle with the coronavirus on Friday, as the state surpassed 500,000 total confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Also on Friday, the state once again broke its record for coronavirus deaths in a single day, confirming 214 new deaths related to the coronavirus. It was the fifth time in July that California broke its own record for deaths reported in a single day, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Central Valley teen dies from COVID-19

Health officials announced Friday that a teenager in Fresno County had died from COVID-19 complications, the first confirmed death of a child from the virus in California.

The teenager had underlying health conditions, according to officials, who did not disclose the youth's age or identity due to privacy concerns.

The patient died earlier this week at Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera, officials said. A worsening outbreak across California's Central Valley prompted Gov. Gavin Newsom to give $52 million to eight Central Valley counties to help them contain the outbreaks there, where positivity rates range from 10.7 to 17.7 percent.

The funding, which comes primarily from a federal grant, will help those counties increase testing and hire more health workers. The state will also deploy "strike teams" composed of state emergency workers and local community organizations to assist in the effort, Newsom said Monday.

Signs of stabilization

Meanwhile, as state officials and ordinary residents hoped the last few days of July would bring some much-needed respite from the doom and gloom, there were signs that the curve may be flattening, state officials said Monday.

Newsom said Monday that while COVID-19 cases continue to grow, the percentage of coronavirus tests coming back positive has held steady at 7.5 percent over the past two weeks, after an alarming spike during the month of June. Hospitalizations and intensive care admissions, too, have slowed in the last two weeks.

"We’re seeing a growth rate, but we’re seeing a decline in the rate of growth," Newsom said at a news conference. "It is not where we need to be, but it's progress indeed."

There were more than 4,635,200 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States and 154,598 deaths as of Sunday, according to Johns Hopkins University. At least 9,365 of those deaths were in California. The U.S. has the most confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths in the world.
