Ninety-one cities and towns in Massachusetts are reporting higher COVID-19 positivity rates over the last 14 days, according to data released Wednesday night by the state Department of Public Health.
Overall, the state has maintained a 0.9% positivity rate, reporting 4,510 COVID-19 cases over the past two weeks. The state reported an average of 4.6 daily cases per capita.

Nantucket, Plainville, Saugus, Tynbsborough, Worcester and Wrentham were named high-risk communities for COVID-19 spread, bringing the total number of high-risk communities to 17. The other 11 communities are Chelsea, Dedham, Everett, Framingham, Lawrence, Lynn, Lynnfield, Monson, New Bedford, Revere and Winthrop.
Methuen and Chatham, which were in the high-risk group last week, were moved out of the red. Methuen, which reported 48 COVID-19 cases over the past two weeks, has averages 6.4 cases per capita and is now labeled “moderate risk.” Chatham reported fewer than 5 cases over the past two weeks and is now considered low risk.
Massachusetts health officials reported 295 new cases and 20 more deaths from coronavirus-linked complications on Wednesday, bringing the state’s death toll to 9,036 people. DPH has reported a total of 123,720 cases since the pandemic began.
But the number of high-risk communities is higher. On Sept. 13, state health officials reported 13 high-risk communities.
The state also reported for the first time COVID-19 tests for college students, faculty and staff. The state published data over the past month, between Aug. 15 and Tuesday, showing more than 500,000 people were tested, including more than 153,000 in the past week. In the past month, there were 499 confirmed COVID-19 cases.
