A man was killed in a solo-vehicle crash Tuesday night near Castroville, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported at 8:59 p.m. on northbound Highway 1 at the interchange with  Highway 156 in unincorporated Monterey County, CHP Officer Scott Alameda said.

A witness had reported a reckless driver in the median moments before the crash. The GMC Sierra then crossed the northbound lanes, struck a light pole and went down a soft dirt embankment into fields on the highway’s right side.

The truck overturned and the driver was ejected.

The driver, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, Alameda said.  Nobody else was in the vehicle.

Alameda said the CHP is investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
