A Castroville man died in a crash near the interchange of highways 1 and 156 late Tuesday night, the California Highway Patrol has reported.

Daniel S. Guyton, 26, died at the crash site after CHP officers were called out at about 11 p.m. to the interchange just outside Castroville, according to a CHP press release Thursday.

Officers said they determined Guyton was coming from northbound Highway 1 onto eastbound Highway 156 in his 1994 GMC Sierra.

He was driving at a high rate of speed when he left the roadway in a northeasterly direction, the CHP said.

The Sierra hit two separate California Department of Transportation poles and overturned.

As the pickup overturned, it threw Guyton from the truck, killing him, the CHP said.

He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the CHP. Officers are still investigating the crash.

No one else was involved in the crash.

The CHP urges drivers and passengers to use seatbelts and approved child seats to prevent injuries and deaths in crashes.
