No holiday break for COVID-19 cases: In Larimer County, 17 new outbreaks reported

Walker Manufacturing in Timnath this week became the second largest manufacturing company in Larimer County to report a major outbreak of COVID-19. 

New outbreak data released by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment reported 20 confirmed cases and another two probable cases at Walker, a family-owned company that makes high-end lawnmowers.

Walker was one of 17 new outbreaks that added 85 new coronavirus cases in Larimer County. Twenty outbreaks previously reported, however, grew by 320 new cases.

The state considers an outbreak to be two or more positive cases within 14 days. 

The manufacturer closed down the week of Nov. 9 due to COVID-19. Representatives were not available for comment on Friday because the plant was closed for the Thanksgiving holiday. 

Excluding hard-hit nursing homes and Colorado State University, which has reported 1,454 COVID cases since May, the largest outbreaks have been among Cameron Peak firefighters, with 66; chip manufacturer Broadcom, 26; Walmart Distribution Center, 22; Larimer County Elections Department, 21; and Fort Collins Jeep and Walker, both with 20 as of Wednesday. 

In addition to Walker Manufacturing, new outbreaks this week were reported at three restaurants, two Estes Park resorts, three schools, a big-box store, a nonprofit, a physical therapy office, an equipment supply business, a financial adviser's office, a heating company, another manufacturer and a nursing home.

In Estes Park, one emergency leads to another 

Loretta Hetke, manager of Murphy's Resort in Estes Park, said five housekeepers at her hotel on Big Thompson Avenue tested positive for COVID-19. The state reported two cases, but sometimes the reporting lags behind cases. 

Hetke said the spike occurred after much of Estes Park was evacuated due to the East Troublesome Fire. 

Before the evacuation, Estes Park has seen relatively few outbreaks of COVID-19 outside of Prospect Park Living Center. 

The town evacuated, "everyone went to different hotels, then bam," they came back and numbers spiked, Hetke said. 

The hotel, which housed firefighters, did not close but blocked out for seven days any room that a COVID-19-positive employee had been in, Hetke said. 

The state also reported three COVID-19 cases at Black Canyon Inn, 800 Macgregor Ave. Representatives from Black Canyon did not return phone calls seeking comment.

In addition, the state reported two cases at Antonio's Pizza. Since then, the county went to Level Red on the COVID-19 risk scale, closing all indoor dining. 

As of Wednesday, the county reported 8,858 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19, including 74 deaths. County offices were closed Thursday and Friday, so the numbers have not been updated. 

November alone saw 16 confirmed and one probable death from COVID-19. All but two of the deaths were in people over age 70; two were in their 60s. 

School numbers increase before learning shifts online

Outbreaks at Poudre and Thompson school districts continue to mount as students transitioned to remote leaning this week through the end of winter break. 

All four comprehensive high schools — Fort Collins, Fossil Ridge, Poudre and Rocky Mountain — previously had met the criteria for an outbreak in the school, according to the state and county health departments.

Blevins Middle School in Fort Collins and Rice Elementary in Wellington were added to the outbreak list this week. 

According to the state, Blevins had five confirmed cases with four students and one staff, and three probable cases. Rice had two cases: one student and one staff. 

Here’s how cases at PSD's high schools stand as of Wednesday, according to the state health department:

• Fort Collins High School: 19 positive and two probable cases (all students), a change from seven positive and two probable cases reported last week. 
• Fossil Ridge High School: 33 positive cases — 29 students, four staff — and one probable case, compared with 29 confirmed cases last week.
• Poudre High School: 21 confirmed positive cases and six probable (all students), up from 18 confirmed positive coronavirus cases and two probable cases last week. 
• Rocky Mountain High School: 16 positive cases, 13 students and three staff; and one probable case, compared with 11 confirmed cases reported last week.

In addition to the outbreak reported last week at Lucile Erwin Middle School, Loveland and Thompson Valley high schools, Cottonwood Plains Elementary reported an outbreak this week.

Here are the statuses at each school, according to the health department:

• Cottonwood Plains Elementary: seven cases this week, two students and five staff.
• Loveland High School: five positive and one probable case (all students). No change from last week.
• Lucile Erwin Middle School: 11 positive cases — nine students, two staff — four probable cases (three students and one staff), up from seven positive and four probable cases. 
• Thompson Valley High School: eight positive cases — five students, three staff — and four probable cases.

Liberty Common High School, which resumed full-time in-person learning Aug. 31, remains on the list of active outbreaks, with five positive cases and one probable case. There was no increase from last week. 

Nursing homes continue to spike 

Columbine West Health & Rehab Facility in Fort Collins is dealing with its second outbreak of COVID-19. A new outbreak confirmed by the state Nov. 18 includes three residents and seven staff members. 

It was the only nursing home added to the outbreak list this week, according to the state.

Cases at Columbine's Lemay Avenue Health and Rehab Facility grew from seven cases to 13, with six residents and seven staff testing positive. 

Courtyard at Loveland, an assisted living center, has the largest outbreak among nursing homes, with 29 positive cases, up a dozen from last week; 21 residents and eight staff. Another four residents are listed as probable COVID-19 cases. 

Hillcrest of Loveland, another assisted living center, has 17 positive cases, 11 residents and six staff, according to the state. The number of cases grew from five last week.

The Still Whiskey Steaks, Fort Collins. Four confirmed cases (all staff). Outbreak determined July 13, resolved Aug. 10.

Starry Night Espresso Cafe, 112 S. College Ave., Fort Collins. Two confirmed cases (both staff). Outbreak confirmed Nov. 3. Store reports the outbreak was in September and has been resolved.

TEN Salon and Spa, 6045 Sky Pond Drive, R100, Loveland. Four confirmed cases (both staff), up two. Outbreak confirmed Nov. 5, resolved Nov. 23.
