Getting a good night’s sleep is hugely important for our overall health and wellbeing. And given how much time many of us spend huddled over a desk, it’s understandable if you’re desperate to find the best pillow for easing neck pain.
In fact, it may not be the office causing your issues; the wrong pillow can cause or exacerbate neck pain, waking you up at night and leaving you feeling groggy in the morning. This happens when the neck becomes locked at an awkward angle or doesn’t get enough support.
Choosing the best pillow for neck pain can prevent aches and make existing issues more manageable. That’s why the Women’s Health Lab set out to find the most supportive bed buddies – here are our favourites at a glance:
How to ease neck pain while you sleep
Neck pain can be caused by many things, which means it’s not always easy to know how to address it. If your neck is giving you lots of trouble, speak to your GP, but it could also be worth considering a new pillow.
For expert advice on finding the most supportive pillow for pain-free snoozing, we turned to Ben Breen, a chiropractor and owner of East London Chiropractic Spinal & Sports Injury Clinic.
'If you continuously suffer neck pain at night but are otherwise pain-free, try experimenting with different pillows,' he suggests. 'Start by switching to another pillow you already own, then change the number of pillows you use. It takes a bit of trial and error to find your perfect set-up, but there is no one-size-fits-all solution.'
If you decide you need a new pillow, invest in something good quality, but don’t expect it to solve all your problems. 'That fancy orthopaedic pillow may eradicate neck pain for some people, but others could find it aggravates symptoms,' says Breen.
Don’t stress too much about your sleep style, either. 'Currently, there's no data to say what is the best type of pillow for different sleeping postures, so it's fine to sleep in different positions on the pillow you currently own,' Breen explains.
'The best position to sleep in to ease neck pain is the one that makes you feel most comfortable. That may mean sleeping in a position that you initially find unnatural, such as on your back when you normally sleep on your side,' he adds.
Many pillows on our roundup are memory foam because it offers personalised support by quickly moulding to your head and neck while you sleep. If you struggle to get the thickness right, try one of the adjustable pillows that allow you to tailor the cushioning.
If you’re nervous about investing in a new pillow, look for one that comes with a trial, and enjoy putting it to the test to see if it delivers the A+ beauty sleep you deserve.
How long should memory foam pillows last?
Expect your memory foam pillow to give you at least two years of nightly use. Check whether it needs replacing by folding it in half and seeing if it springs back or stays folded. If the latter, it's time for a new one. Likewise, swap it out if it gets lumpy or you start waking up with neck pain again.
How we test the best pillow for neck pain
To find the best pillow for neck pain, the WH Lab asked a panel of 48 readers to trial a range s at home for at least two weeks.
They then shared their experiences with our expert testers via a detailed survey, covering how comfortable they were to sleep on, how cool they felt at night, how much neck support they offered and whether they were worth the price tag.
Finally, our experts analysed their feedback and conducted thorough wash tests to ensure the pillows wouldn’t shrink if you popped them in the washing machine.
There’s a pillow for all budgets on this list, no matter your sleep style.
