Getting a good night’s sleep is hugely important for our overall health and wellbeing. And given how much time many of us spend huddled over a desk, it’s understandable if you’re desperate to find the best pillow for easing neck pain.

In fact, it may not be the office causing your issues; the wrong pillow can cause or exacerbate neck pain, waking you up at night and leaving you feeling groggy in the morning. This happens when the neck becomes locked at an awkward angle or doesn’t get enough support.

Choosing the best pillow for neck pain can prevent aches and make existing issues more manageable. That’s why the Women’s Health Lab set out to find the most supportive bed buddies – here are our favourites at a glance:

How to ease neck pain while you sleep

Neck pain can be caused by many things, which means it’s not always easy to know how to address it. If your neck is giving you lots of trouble, speak to your GP, but it could also be worth considering a new pillow.

For expert advice on finding the most supportive pillow for pain-free snoozing, we turned to Ben Breen, a chiropractor and owner of East London Chiropractic Spinal & Sports Injury Clinic.

'If you continuously suffer neck pain at night but are otherwise pain-free, try experimenting with different pillows,' he suggests. 'Start by switching to another pillow you already own, then change the number of pillows you use. It takes a bit of trial and error to find your perfect set-up, but there is no one-size-fits-all solution.'

If you decide you need a new pillow, invest in something good quality, but don’t expect it to solve all your problems. 'That fancy orthopaedic pillow may eradicate neck pain for some people, but others could find it aggravates symptoms,' says Breen.

Don’t stress too much about your sleep style, either. 'Currently, there's no data to say what is the best type of pillow for different sleeping postures, so it's fine to sleep in different positions on the pillow you currently own,' Breen explains.

'The best position to sleep in to ease neck pain is the one that makes you feel most comfortable. That may mean sleeping in a position that you initially find unnatural, such as on your back when you normally sleep on your side,' he adds.

Many pillows on our roundup are memory foam because it offers personalised support by quickly moulding to your head and neck while you sleep. If you struggle to get the thickness right, try one of the adjustable pillows that allow you to tailor the cushioning.

If you’re nervous about investing in a new pillow, look for one that comes with a trial, and enjoy putting it to the test to see if it delivers the A+ beauty sleep you deserve.

How long should memory foam pillows last?

Expect your memory foam pillow to give you at least two years of nightly use. Check whether it needs replacing by folding it in half and seeing if it springs back or stays folded. If the latter, it's time for a new one. Likewise, swap it out if it gets lumpy or you start waking up with neck pain again.

How we test the best pillow for neck pain

To find the best pillow for neck pain, the WH Lab asked a panel of 48 readers to trial a range s at home for at least two weeks.

They then shared their experiences with our expert testers via a detailed survey, covering how comfortable they were to sleep on, how cool they felt at night, how much neck support they offered and whether they were worth the price tag.

Finally, our experts analysed their feedback and conducted thorough wash tests to ensure the pillows wouldn’t shrink if you popped them in the washing machine.

There’s a pillow for all budgets on this list, no matter your sleep style.

Our winning memory foam pillow gave all our testers a first class night’s rest, no matter their sleeping style. It moulded to their heads and necks like a dream, offering excellent support, and it didn’t give off that common plasticky smell.

Don’t choose it for its cooling claims alone, as it didn’t blow us away in that regard, but our panellists all gave it 10/10 and said they would buy it themselves. It’s pricey but currently on sale, with 50% off the usual £99.

Full disclaimer, we're huge fans of Emma here at the WH Lab. Both its mattress and duvet are our top bedroom buys, and this pillow is no exception.

It boasts three lush layers of memory foam (and you can take one or two out if you want a slimmer build) and its cover can go in the wash for easy cleaning. One tester told us it was like sleeping on a cloud, while another reported a much-improved sleeping pattern. It eased aches and pains, too. An all-round dream to snuggle up with.

Here’s an adjustable microfibre/memory foam combo that's fluffy, comfortable and won't go flat on you. The 'nanocubes' of memory foam can be taken out and stored in the included drawstring bag so you can get the thickness and firmness just right for you, even if you mostly sleep on your stomach.

It smells a bit odd at first but this disappears quickly. Though expensive, it really does suit everyone.

Snuggle up with a pillow that offers just the right level of puffiness, thanks to its memory foam design, which lets you add or remove foam as needed to find your ideal support and comfort level. Our testers liked sinking their heads into it and its cover washed outstandingly well in our lab.

Note, if you fill it to the max with foam you may need to invest in a bigger pillowcase – time to finally get that silk bedding we’ve been eyeing up!

This adjustable memory foam pillow is encased in 100% pure cotton, making it a breezier buy if you run hot. Plus, our panel found the luxe design soft and supportive.

It’s pretty thick at first, so if you like a slimmer pillow then you may want to remove some foam. But note – you may need to experiment to find the right depth, as some of our testers found they removed too much. As is often the case, it all comes down to what works best for you.

Memory foam has a bad reputation for breathability but hotheads needn't miss out on the unbeatable support it offers. This pillow is made with sweat-wicking bamboo and infused with naturally antibacterial charcoal, making it a lot cooler than most.

It's satisfying to slump into but our side-sleeping testers found it too thin to support their necks sufficiently. It's noticeably firm, too, making it one for back sleepers.

Conscious shoppers and allergy sufferers will rate this memory foam pillow’s green credentials. Its biodegradable, organic bamboo cover is breathable and naturally hypoallergenic, making it a savvy buy if you're prone to the sniffles.

It’s supportive, soft and cosy to sleep on, but it's 60cm shorter than your average pillow, so check sizes before buying standard pillow covers. Its medium firmness and thickness make it a trusty crowd-pleaser.

If it’s down you’ve set your heart on, look no further. This luxe pillow felt soft and light with a supportive centre. It kept its fluffiness night after night and our testers raved about it, declaring it a fantastic buy that gave hotel-level comfort at home.

It made that classic down rustling sound when moving around and it deflated a tad in the wash, but it’s otherwise hard to fault.

Wool has a long list of qualities that make it ideal for sleeping with: it’s hypoallergenic, moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating. With this pillow you can also adjust the amount inside so it’s the right firmness for your neck, and you can even pop the whole thing in the wash – something that impressed our expert in the lab.

At night, our panel were unanimous: it’s seriously comfortable. We’re sold.
