ARLINGTON, Texas (KXAN) — Westlake is a state champion for the second time in school history.

Westlake stifled Denton Guyer for a 24-0 victory in the 6A-Division 2 State Championship Saturday at AT&T Stadium.

This is Westlake’s first state championship since 1996 when Drew Brees was the quarterback of the Chaps. The school is now 2-for-9 in state title appearances.

Westlake quarterback Kirkland Michaux was named Offensive MVP. Westlake’s Michael Taaffe earned Defensive MVP honors with a first quarter interception that stopped Guyer’s building momentum.

The Chaps got on the board first with a touchdown on the opening drive of the 6A-Division 2 State Championship game against Denton Guyer.

The Chaparrals scored on a five-yard pass from quarterback Kirkland Michaux to senior tight end Jake Misch for a 7-0 lead.

Texas Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger is in the building to watch his alma mater. Ehlinger led the Chaps to the 2015 6A-Division 2 state title game.

Guyer was dealt a severe blow on their first drive of the game. Standout quarterback and Texas A&M commit Eli Stowers injured his leg on a third down run and is unlikely to return to the game.

Westlake took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter. The Chaps seized a two-score lead on an impressive effort from Michaux. Westlake used the improvisation of Michaux for a 33-yard touchdown to Mason Mangum on a 4th and 18 in Guyer territory. Michaux avoided pressure for several seconds before finding Mangum wide open in the end zone for a 14-0 lead.

The identity of Westlake’s season has been a dominant defense and the Chaparrals were relentless Saturday night against Guyer’s back-up quarterback Jackson Arnold.

Arnold, a freshman, deserves credit for staying composed in a game of this magnitude, but Westlake put continuous pressure on the young passer. Fittingly, Westlake waited until the state title to earn the first shutout of the season. The Chaps allowed a touchdown or less in 12 of 16 games this season.

The Chaps added to their lead late in the third quarter on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Michaux to Jackson Coker for a 21-0 lead. Junior David Leadbetter tacked on a 27-yard field goal for a 24-0 Chaps lead after the third quarter.
