A Happy Life: Career Exploration in the time of COVID-19 Virtual Workshop: 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 19, Newburgh Free Library, Newburgh. Covid-19 has left many experiencing varying degrees of unemployment or career uncertainty. In this Zoom workshop Career Counselor Amy Bandolik will show how this time period can be used as an opportunity for self-exploration and career reinvention. She'll lead participants in several exercises designed to help them find a new career that the best fit for their passions and interests and will go over how to pursue a new career. Warwick Valley Quilt Guild new membership offer: Starting in January 2021, memberships being accepted during the month of October. Tuesday meetings will be via Zoom as they are unable to meet at the Warwick Senior Center. At this time, they have engaged national quilting speakers who show their work, teach new techniques, and spark deals to stimulate our creativity. Me-Time Meet-Up for Caregivers of Babies via Zoom: 9:30 a.m. Oct. 20. Meet up with other caregivers of babies (birth to 18 months). Virtual Writing Workshop - Newburgh Memories: 7-8 p.m. Oct. 20, Newburgh Free Library, Newburgh, free. Share your memories of Newburgh from the far or recent past. Martian Life Mission to be described by NASA Representative: 7:30-9:15 p.m. Oct. 20, via Zoom, Mid Hudson Astronomical Association. NASA Solar System Ambassador John Fontana will be describing the latest mission to explore Mars for evidence of life. Launched in July, the Mars 2020 probe, officially named Perseverance, is on a journey there to investigate if life existed or could still exist. A space enthusiast since the days of Gemini, Fontana is now a NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador. He is a Human Resources professional and has been profiled in Who’s Who in America. The presentation will be delivered via Zoom at 8 p.m. after the regular scheduled 7:30 p.m. meeting of the Mid Hudson Astronomical Association. Friendly Visitor Volunteer Training via Zoom: 3 p.m. Oct. 22. Jewish Family Service of Orange County invites you to become a Friendly Visitor Volunteer in Orange County. This 90-minute training prepares potential volunteers to provide support to older adults in your own communities. For about 3 hours a week or less, volunteers provide local transportation to essential appointments, grocery shopping and friendly visits. John Conway, Sullivan County Historian, presents “Ghost Stories from Sullivan County History”: 6 p.m. Oct. 22. From the ethereal spirits believed to still roam the site of a bloody Revolutionary War battle to the restless specter of the victim of an 1892 hex murder said to haunt the stone arch bridge where he was killed, local lore is filled with tales that tantalize, and John Conway will discuss some of the most popular in this new program. Composting Workshop Session 2: 2-3:30 p.m. Oct. 23, Mamakating Environmental Center, 762 South Rd., Wurtsboro, free. Hosted by Outdoor Organics Management. Even during a Pandemic approximately 40 percent of food is wasted in the United States. This means almost 30 percent of the solid waste we ship to distant landfills for expensive disposal consists of unwanted food and organic waste. There are ways to change this, beginning with smarter food production, preservation and distribution to food pantry donations to recovery of spent food as animal feed and compost. We will examine organics on a small scale at the Environmental Education Center and demonstrate principles of organics management that apply to households and businesses. In the spirit of 18th century Gothic literature, costumed interpreters from the New Windsor Cantonment & Knox's Headquarters submit for your approval a haunting tale. The eerie night-cloaked grounds of the historic Knox's Headquarters, the 1754 Ellison home, serve as a stage for this macabre presentation about strange happenings. Thursday, Oct. 29 

“Tell-Tale Heart Mock Trial” presented by Dean Knight: 6 p.m. Oct. 29. Poe Museum Education Coordinator, Dean Knight, will give a dramatic reading of Edgar Allan Poe's great story “The Tell-Tale Heart” in the format of a murderer on trial for his life. Participants will serve as judge, defense, prosecuting attorneys and jury and will decide whether the narrator of the story is guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity. Knight will also discuss aspects of Poe's life and work, including the time Poe spent in Richmond, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.  He will take questions from the audience.
