No headset, no problem: Russell Wilson called his own plays for a drive and scored a TD

It doesn’t seem like losing headset communication made for much of a problem for the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Quarterback Russell Wilson couldn’t speak with his coaches during a third-quarter drive against the Cleveland Browns at FirstEnergy Stadium. Still, Wilson led the Seahawks to a 58-yard drive and a go-ahead touchdown. He didn’t bother taking a timeout. Instead, he called the plays on his own. And perhaps he was a natural because he had practice from the fourth preseason game when he called plays for Seattle.

It’s yet another bullet point on Wilson’s resume as he makes his case for the NFL MVP in 2019. He finished the win with 295 passing yards and two passing touchdowns while adding a rushing touchdown — even if the Seahawks’ win wasn’t without controversy after the officials made a particularly bad call on a blindside block.

Here’s what Wilson said about the no-communication drive during a postgame press conference, via NBC Sports:

“The helmet went off at the beginning of the drive. I couldn’t hear anything so I just kept calling plays. You study the game plan, and you know what you want to do and how you want to get the ball to different guys. We were running up and down the field.”

While the Seahawks have elected to feature their run game (perhaps to a fault), Wilson has managed outstanding statistics (72.5 completion percentage, 1,704 passing yards, 14 TDs and 0 INTs). But moments like these are what could set him apart from the other MVP candidates like Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.
