Job growth: Hiring rate in Hyderabad a concern compared to rest of India, Kolkata on top

HYDERABAD: While the overall job market across India grew by 21 per cent in April 2018, as compared to April 2017, in Hyderabad the jump was limited to 13 per cent, shows the latest report published by an online job portal. The city stood at the bottom of charts, along with the IT hub Chennai (also 13 per cent), even as Kolkata walked away with the top spot.The east Indian city reported a phenomenal hiring rate of 38 per cent in April this year and appeared most promising with the greatest momentum.

Both Delhi and Mumbai, as witnessed steady northward movement with a year-on-year rise of 15 per cent and 14 per cent respectively in hiring activity.
According to the report, published by Naukri.com, the growth of the country’s job market was largely driven by non-IT sectors such as automobile, telecom; and construction and engineering during this period, even as the IT sector recorded a mere two per cent rise in growth. Hirings recorded in the ITeS sector stood at 13 per cent.
“The auto sector has been hiring at a steady pace and hiring activities here showed the most growth — of 31 per cent— in May this year,” read the report. In construction and engineering the jump was 21 per cent, while pharma and telecom reported growths of 18 per cent and 25 per cent individually. Two other industries that threw up an impressive number of job opportunities were the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG sector) at 21 per cent and the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry at 18 per cent.
“Although there is an air of caution surrounding jobs in the IT sector currently, new roles are opening and the hiring activity has shown a slight improvement over the past year. Skills in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science is high in demand among employers in Hyderabad. There is however, a skill mismatch when it comes to these job roles due to which reason overall hiring activity in the city may remain low when compared to other metros,” said Pallavi S, a HR professional.
